The compact high performance SUP foiling board that’s very stable but reactive in wing foiling.

Presentation

The shape of the Flint is very wide at the tips. This almost rectangular outline makes it possible to reduce the length and width for the same ease-of-use. The board is super stable at standstill.

The wing foiling/SUP foiling versatility of the Flint means that you need to keep some length to be able to row properly. It is by staying in 5′ and 6′ that we have played on the width to radicalise this concept.

  • In wing: it will be super lively because you will certainly take a short board, without the discomfort of an extreme board with thin tips. Quite the contrary, on the water you will have the advantages of a bigger board, especially at take-off where it is king. It glides across the water and pops in the blink of an eye. Surfing, jumping, cruising, turning, everything is easy on the Flint. And in the event of a splash, it is not a hassle to get going again. It will help your progression and maximize your flight time in all conditions.
  • In SUP: with a good level, we will like this compactness which will favour tight turns, changes of support and especially pumping. In rowing, it’s almost simple, especially if you take a generous volume. The square tail allows to tilt the board into the wave and its volume allows to drop very early. The very pronounced double concave under the nose channels the board straight when rowing. In flight the maneuverability is impressive because the length is reduced to a minimum. Its magical tail, the facets on the rails, and the large double concave allow you to fly serenely without being afraid of braking hard on the slightest touchdown or in tight curves. Thanks to the paddle, we are close to the handling of a surf foiling board, and the feeling is really nice. Connecting multiple waves by pumping becomes your norm with this compact board that loves to do turns and airs.

High performances without the disadvantages of a complicated board, in SUP foiling as well as in wing foiling.

Shape
Hull

The new hull shape with a double concave nose dampens the touchdowns by dissipating energy and guiding the board in a straight line before take-off. The Flint is smooth, easy and stiff.

Tail

The tail inherited from the Lethal is a benchmark in terms of pre-flight flow management. Your board no longer sticks before flying. It’s really released from the water surface, it’s super fun and obviously efficient. And it looks very pretty in the air.

Rails

The facets on the rails allow you to fly serenely without being afraid of braking hard on the slightest touchdown on a chop or in tight curves.

The rails are full for great lateral stability. It also limits the row effect by creating resistance in the rotation.

The flat deck optimises control and the feel is directly in sync with the action.

Buying guide

For whom?

This is the board for anyone who wants a short but not complicated SUP board.

You need to have a good level in foil to enjoy the Flint. Ok, it’s twice as easy as the Lemon, but getting on a board under 6′ is not something you can improvise.

It’s typically the board for those who want an all-purpose board, but high performance.

  • In wing foiling, the Flint is a board that is accessible to an advanced rider. You don’t need to be a Wing world champion to have fun on the Flint. It is both easy and very efficient.
  • In SUP foiling, the first thing you need to know is how to row straight on a microboard. Otherwise, you won’t catch any waves. If you know how to fly and row, the rest is easy because it is a board that is not very demanding for its size, physically and technically.

In big volume it is easy, but in small sizes you need to be in good physical shape.

For what?

The Flint is the compact and accessible board that works equally well in SUP foiling and wing foiling.

It will give you great stability at standstill with its rectangular outline. And it will take off very early thanks to its low rocker and the very central positioning of the foil. This positioning of the foil and the straps in the centre of the rectangular outline gives a lot of stability.

  • In wing foiling, it’s the compact board/easy board ratio that will seduce you. It has all the advantages of a short board but not the flaws. And it flies super early.
  • In SUP foil it is the most committed board in the range. Ideal for tight turns, for doing aerials, but not for struggling when rowing.

What size?

In wing foiling, you can take it rather generous if you are a beginner. And if you already have a good level, you will, on the contrary, go for a limited volume by following the same rule as in SUP foiling above.

You can also go for a volume that’s below your weight because the Flint is wide enough at the tips to be stable. So, if you have a great level and want maximum reactivity, you can go this direction. With a volume up to your weight – 10, you can start on your knees by leaning on the wing. Below this volume you will have to do waterstarts by sinking the board: it’s very technical, very physical, and you lose the lower half of your wind range. Each time you fall you have to start all over again… Not very funny, and a very questionable performance gain.

In SUP foiling, you absolutely must have a positive volume balance. Your weight plus the weight of the board must be less than the volume of the board. Don’t hesitate to take up some volume and width if you are not sure of your supports.

You can take up enough volume to float, in such a way that it is your weight + 10 = volume.

  • Example: I weigh 80kg + 10 = 90L to float. This means that with a 5’6 of 95L I will float, as long as I have a good level in SUP foil. And if I want comfort, I will have to add 20 instead of 10 and therefore switch to the 5’8 of 110L.

How to choose the size of the board bag for my Wing Foil Board Flint?

Understanding the GONG range?

The concept of each board of the range can be summed up very simply:

  • HIPE First: the perfect inflatable board to learn wing foiling!
  • HIPE Free Fly: the best of strapless on an inflatable foil board.
  • HIPE Perf: the inflatable foil board with 95% of the performance of a rigid board, in an easy and scalable shape.
  • HIPE Cruzader Strapless: the strapless inflatable board with 95% of the performance of a rigid  board with an ultra specialized shape, ideal for light wind winging and chilled out SUP foiling.
  • HIPE Cruzader strapped : the inflatable board with 95% of the performance of a rigid  board with an ultra specialized shape, for the highest performance in light wind winging.
  • HIPE Pro: the inflatable board with 95% of the performance of a rigid one with a shape dedicated to advanced foilers who want fluidity and maximum responsiveness!
  • Mob 2taste: three sports in one board: SUP, SUP foiling and wing foiling.
  • Zuma: the easy rigid board for SUP foiling and wing foiling, and with good performance.
  • Lance: the compact Zuma, with great lateral stability, ideal for beginnings in wing foiling.
  • Cruzader: fantastic in SUP downwinders, pumping on the flat, but also in light wind conditions in wing foiling.
  • Flint: high performance in SUP foiling, great in wing foiling because it is simple and efficient in light wind.
  • Kube: pure freestyle board. Minimum length for maximum rotation.
  • Mint: compact without being too technical thanks to a perfect length and its round nose. Great performance in strapless too.
  • Lemon: maximum reactivity and liveliness, while maintaining stability.
  • Lethal: Absolute radicality among volume boards

Some will go for even more extreme with low volume boards like:

Which quiver?

The Flint is really the all-rounder in foil boar. So, it’s going to take up a very large part of your quiver.

It is certainly a board that you will keep for a long time because it is unbeatable in the light wind. And you’ll get a more radical board for strong winds, in the program of your choice.

You can of course complete it with a range of stand-up paddleboards without foil. And surfboards for those days when the waves are unsuitable for foil.

  • M for those under 85kg or heavier riders in winds above 15 knots.
  • L for everyone and heavier riders in winds above 12 knots.
  • XL for everyone in light conditions and the heavier riders in winds below 20 knots.
  • XXL for everyone in very light wind and the heavier riders in winds below 12 knots.

In the Veloce H range: fast wings with a crazy glide that love curves, and still are easy at low speed:

  • S for those under 75kg or heavier riders in winds above 20 knots.

  • XS for those under 55kg or the heavier riders in winds above 20 knots.
  • S for those under 65kg or the heavier riders in winds above 20 knots.
  • M for those under 75kg or the heavier riders in winds above 15 knots.
  • L for everyone and the heavier riders in winds above 12 knots.
  • XL for everyone in the light and the heavier riders in winds below 20 knots.

In the Ypra S range for Slalom : racing wings with maximum curves / jibes, also great for Freestyle:

  • XS for those under 55kg or the heavier riders in winds above 20 knots.
  • S for those under 65kg or the heavier riders in winds above 20 knots.
  • M for those under 75kg or the heavier riders in winds above 15 knots.
  • L for everyone and the heavier riders in winds above 12 knots.
  • XL for everyone in the light and the heavier riders in winds below 20 knots.

In the Sirus range: wings with the ultimate aspect ratio for marginal conditions:

  • L for those under 75kg in winds under 12 knots.
  • XL for those under 85kg in winds under 8/10 knots or the heavier riders in winds under 15 knots.
  • XXL for those under 95kg in winds under 6/8 knots or the bigger riders in winds less than 12 knots.
  • 3XL for everyone in the very light wind and the bigger riders in winds under 10 knots.

At this level, everyone can adapt their equipment to their needs. Just remember that the wingspan is a point to take into consideration when riding high aspect ratios. The glide is fabulous, but be careful not to sacrifice maneuverability and rail-to-rail precision by using large sizes if you are looking for a very reactive drive. This is why even the pros do not necessarily ride in high aspect ratios!

The size of the front wing and in particular its surface and its volume condition the speed/lift ratio. The smaller the wing, the faster you will go but the more uncomfortable you will be at low speeds. The bigger the wing, the earlier you will fly but you’ll be penalized in handling and top speed.

Which Stab?

The stabs have a major role. They determine the stability of the foil and help with its lift, but to the detriment of the maximum speed of the foil and its maneuverability if they are too large. The role of the stabilizer is to stabilize the foil but also to compensate for the natural tendency of the front wing to dive. So you must have a good balance of surfaces between your stab and your front wing. A 38 cm stab with an XXL wing will give a catastrophic result at high speed: the foil will dive at high speed because the stab will no longer be able to lift enough to counteract the nosediving torque of the front wing.

Remember that the stab must be proportional to the front wing. This is why we have named them S M L XL like the front wings so that you can pair them easily. Creating an imbalance brings no benefit except the illusion of better glide.

Thus the X-Over stabs are slower than the Fluid or Veloce stabs, but are much more lifty, and therefore effective at low speed or with a large front wing (for beginners for example). The Curve stab is at the border of these two worlds and the Freestyle stab is 100% dedicated to radical moves.

In the X-Over range: super easy and effective stabs from low speeds to progress smoothly:

  • L 44 for those under 75kg and for everyone in winds above 15 knots.
  • XL 48 for those over 75kg and for everyone in winds below 20 knots.

In the Curve range: very simple stabs that love beautiful curves, with a stable and smooth glide:

  • S 36 for those under 65kg and for everyone in winds over 25 knots.
  • M 39 for those under 75kg and for everyone in winds over 20 knots.
  • L 43 for those under 85kg and for everyone in winds above 15 knots.
  • XL 46 for those over 95kg and for everyone in winds of less than 20 knots.

In the Fluid H range: stabs with a crazy glide for a radical drive but easy and relatively fast:

  • S 38 for those under 65kg and for everyone in winds over 25 knots.
  • M 42 for those under 75kg and for everyone in winds above 18 knots.
  • L 45 for those under 85kg and for everyone in winds above 12 knots.
  • XL 47 for those over 95kg and for everyone in winds below 20 knots.
  • XXL 49 for everyone in very light winds and bigger people in winds below 12 knots.

In the Veloce H range: the fast stabs dedicated to high speeds which are off your mind when riding:

  • S 36 for those under 65kg and for everyone in winds over 25 knots.
  • M 40 for those under 75kg and for everyone in winds above 20 knots.
  • L 44 for those under 85kg and for everyone in winds above 15 knots.
  • XL 47 for those over 95kg and for everyone in winds below 20 knots.

In the Freestyle range: stabs totally dedicated to tricks with a psycho pop and tight curves:

  • S 39 for those under 65kg and for everyone in winds over 25 knots.
  • M 41 for those under 75kg and for everyone in winds over 20 knots.
  • L 44 for those under 85kg and for everyone in winds above 15 knots.
  • XL 46 for those over 95kg and for everyone in winds of less than 20 knots.

Which Mast?

In SUP foiling

The65cm aluminium Allvator V2 is perfect. If you are a pro, go for the70 HM Carbon Mast: amazing.

In Wing foiling

In short, everything will come down to choosing between 85cm and 100cm. Find all our advice for choosing between these two lengths by clicking here. In summary, for waves and freestyle, as well as for beginners and progressing, an 85cm mast is ideal. Easy to get in the water, smooth transitioning from one rail to another, it’s perfect. A mast of 90cm and above, on the other hand, is dedicated to racing, offering more stability at high speeds in choppy conditions but less maneuverability.

Positioning of the foil?

For GONG foils, place the plate in the rear third when you start and in the center of the US rails when you progress. The Pros can position the foil even further towards the front for more lift and maneuverability.

The more you move it forward, the more the board will pitch nose-up. The more you move it backwards, the more the board nose-dives.

Be careful not to move it too far forward. We often tend not to let their back foot work, especially when we come from kite foiling. However, moving the foil back a little, forces more weight on the back foot and gives a more harmonious attitude and reduces effort.

How long is the paddle?

If you want to use the Flint in SUP foil you will need a paddle between your height -10cm and your height. The easiest and least traumatic for your back is to have a paddle at your height.

A long paddle relieves the physical exertion, especially in the lower back as you have to work yourself up at the take off. The effort is intense.

A short paddle gives more speed and less discomfort in the air. But it damages the back because we tend to row too much behind our feet, which forces on the lumbar vertebrae.

Which leash?

Take a 6′ of 7mm minimum diameter.

Check its condition before each session and change it every year. It is your lifejacket and the life insurance of the people in front of you.

Strap or Strapless?

Riding strapless is sexy because it makes you feel free. But quite honestly, it’s not the best for performance…

So, it’s up to you to see if sensation prevails over performance. On a Flint, we’re clearly going to miss 90% of its potential without the straps.

With straps, you’ll have much more control and much less risk of getting the Foil flipping under your feet. In the waves, it’s obvious, you gain a lot with straps. You can recuperate from crazy situations just by pulling up on your feet.

Put your straps in a central position (3rd hole) for the front, and the same goes for the back strap if you still ride with the back.

If you want to be able to get the back foot out for transitions and surfing, put the back strap on the first hole.

How to place and adjust your straps?

Good to know:

1/ The Flint is an easy board for foiling. You can cheat by taking a big volume but keep in mind that in SUP foiling it is still a small board that will be complicated in the chop. In wing foiling it’s totally fine because you have the wing to hold on to.
2/ The foil strongly stabilises a SUP when you are used to it. Do not compare the width of SUP boards without a foil with SUP boards with a foil. 5cm less are painless when having a foil under your board, except when there’s a strong backwash.

This reduced width is necessary to speed up these very small boards when rowing and for early take offs.

3/ When water covers the tail it stabilizes the board. Sometimes too much volume is worse than anything. This is very true in compact boards that tend to tilt over.

Equipments

The set of footstraps is offered with the board. For 2023 we have reviewed the outline of our straps to further improve comfort. Developed for wing foiling, these straps with less cover do not bend when put on. More rigid, they offer a more precise steering but are still as comfortable. There is less surface area on the feet so there is less risk of staying stuck in the straps or banging your foot on the edge of the strap when rushing into it. It also allows better leeward control (tip of the foot) and therefore a more natural attitude in wing foiling. We have worked on every detail to improve your experience on the water. The V-shaped footstraps perfectly center the foot on the front of the board. The position is thus more natural and allows direct and precise control in maneuvers. In SUP foil the V footstrap is replaced by a second single footstrap (not included in the set). The multi-position SUP/wing strap inserts and the US foil rails provide a multitude of adjustments, and make it possible to quickly find the ideal position for both SUP and wing.

For 2023, our SCS system launched on the HIPE is integrated on all our foil boards. It’s beautiful, efficient and above all it saves time you can spend on the water. With its 4 entries, the GONG double entry box facilitates the assembly and adjustment of the foil. Performance without the hassle. We leave the nuts and the screws on the plate, just insert the foil, screw and off we go! Setting up the foil is much faster and easier. It is the plug and play solution which facilitates adjustments!(inserts not supplied with the board).

handle developed by our R&D and our ergonomics engineer has been integrated into our boards this year. We can better close our hands in it: a firmer and more comfortable grip. The depressurization screw is directly integrated into the handle. It is placed on the hull to allow one-handed carrying. You can have the wing and the paddle in the other hand to get past the whitewater or to get out of the water. And as we always do things seriously, the handle is placed in a block of hydrophobic PVC foam and covered with fiber.

The top-of-the-range 5mm thick integral hard brush pad provides maximum grip and comfort when sailing, while protecting the board from shocks. This year we have changed the grooving to provide even more comfort and more grip. This hard brush pad sublimates the board. This flat pad provides absolute comfort and a magical grip with more precision. This is obvious on long sessions: the feet are less tired.

Included equipments:

  • 2 US GONG Box Double Entry for standard foil plates equipped with 4 screw + nuts (9cm center distance). Compatible with our SCS system. This new system allows ultra-fast assembly of GONG foils.(inserts not supplied with the board).
  • 8 x 5-hole footstrap inserts to optimize your position in wing and SUP foiling.
  • 1 x large light double V-shaped front footstrap and 1 x large light rear footstrap (screws included).
  • 5 mm hard brush pad: deck covering designed for great comfort and absolute grip.
  • GONG carrying handle integrated in the center of the board on the hull.
  • Leash plug to never lose your board.
  • Automatic vent screw. (link to the HOW TO)

Delivery tracking is managed directly by the carriers to whom we have entrusted your packages. They will contact you by email or SMS to allow you to choose delivery methods and follow the route of your package.

Carriers

We work with the best transport societies to deliver to you throughout Europe and the world within very short deadlines. We chose them for their quality of service and their compliance with deadlines.

For mainland France, 80% of your orders arrive at their destination in less than 48 hours of processing.

For Europe, delivery times vary from 3 to 6 working days, depending on the country of destination.

For the rest of the world, delivery times depend on transit time and customs clearance time. This delay depends on customs and can last from a few days to a few weeks depending on the destination and seasonality.

Please note, transport time is added to preparation/shipping time. Two companies collaborate on your order (GONG and the carrier). Each one masters its activity and is committed to optimizing its deadlines so that you are delivered as quickly as possible and at a reasonable price.

Eco-responsible packaging

Preserving the environment is an absolute priority. This is why we do everything possible to reduce our ecological footprint.

The most important thing is to sell quality, durable products that will be repairable and will please you for a long time.

For our shipments, we use:

  • Scotch craft paper.

  • Final packaging in high-end cardboard.

  • For rigid boards: Flexi-Hex, very high resistance ecological packaging.

This means:

  • Reusable and recyclable packaging.

  • An almost total reduction in single-use plastic.

  • Maximum protection and impact resistance for rigid boards thanks to the innovative Flexi-Hex honeycomb design (35mm thick).

Receipt of your product

Upon delivery, check the condition of your package in the presence of the carrier. A complete explanation email on the procedure to follow will be sent to you when your order is shipped.

Despite our requirements and all the care we take in the packaging and protection of your product, transport hazards may occur, and your product may suffer more or less significant transport damage.

Note that the products are protected in their carton. If you have any doubts, simply refuse delivery and contact us.

Warning

When you practice foil you expose yourself to possible serious risks. A poor mastering of a foil can expose you to cuts and/or serious bodily harm, even death for yourself and possibly others around you.

Foiling should be practiced, in all circumstances, by taking precautions and taking into consideration all that is involved and associated with surf/SUP sports. Remember that a foil is long and has an edge that could cause slicing and is capable of reaching very high speeds. Getting hit by a foil, or hitting another, can have dramatic and highly unwanted consequences.

Always foil far from others, and in waters that are secure and without obstacle.

Always wear a helmet andprotective vest that assures floatability. Always wear a full body neoprene wetsuit.

When handling and manipulating a foil be careful not to cut yourself along its edges.

GONG does not accept and declines any and all responsibility in case of accident that implicates a GONG foil. The practicing of this sport and the use of our equipment makes the user fully responsable for his/her actions while being a foil user.
