The most rigid and reliable full carbon mast.

Description

This new high modulus and prepreg full carbon mast is essential in the quiver of a demanding rider. The 77 cm HM mast is dedicated to high performance surf foiling or SUP foiling use,but also downwinders and dock starts, or even wing foiling.

On this mast you can carve much harder than with the 70 cm without breaching, even on a large front wing.

Absolutely perfect for hollow waves on which its length can absorb the steepness without getting overwhelmed or flirting dangerously with the surface.

More generally, it is essential in any situations where you need a margin, starting with the whitewater at the exit of the wave and when pumping. Of course you need a little more water to take off and the rail to rail will be less incisive than with the 70 cm, but the additional 7 cm can bring that little something that separates a frustrating touchdown from a crazy maneuver.

This length also translates to a better pop thanks to the amplitude of the resource: ideal for back flips! The difference in projection in the air is phenomenal.

On a downwinder with a poorly formed swell and a large front wing, the extra 7 cm mean more margin for errors and less sneaky ventilation. You gain serenity when flying with the 77 HM without having to settle for the less playful rail to rail of an 85cm mast.

77 cm is also ideal for dock starts from high pontoons or if you want your run to last. We clearly feel the benefits of this additional margin.

The 77 cm allows an optimal amplitude for pumping. We are going to multiply the movement. You can decrease the frequency while going faster. But this isn’t 85 cm though as we keep the nervousness of a short mast if we want to pick up the pace.

The 77cm length is ideal for use in surf foiling or SUP foiling. It is the perfect length for take off, aggressive curves in the waves and absolute rigidity.

In pumping, the rigidity gain is close to 30% compared to a classic mast. It is very effective because we do not lose energy in imbalances and faults due to flexibility. It’s so mind-blowing that you have to actually test it to believe it. And this is even truer with high aspect wings which put a lot of effort on the mast.

Note: The fuselage is sold separately from the HM mast.

Your benefits are clear:

  • A top level shape created by one of the leaders in the foiling world.
  • A design at the cutting edge of R&D and ahead of its time.
  • The incomparable stiffness of high modulus carbon and stringer!
  • Best weight/rigidity compromise thanks to high-pressure molding in one-pass.
  • No play possible thanks to the conical assembly.
  • Solidity thanks to pro aluminum or titanium fuselages, proven on thousands of foils.
  • Significant weight gain with our foam mast.

Shape
Rigid profile

Its high modulus carbon construction with internal stringer is super rigid and responsive. This technology is the very best in high pressure, high temperature molded carbon construction.

Good to know : High modulus carbon is a form of carbon fiber that has high stiffness and high tensile and compressive strength. This stiffness is due to a higher carbon content and more precise orientation of the carbon fibers, which improves resistance to deformation and stress. High modulus carbon is made from very fine carbon fibers, which are usually woven or braided, then impregnated with a special epoxy resin to increase strength and durability. The mechanical properties of high modulus carbon make it an ideal material for applications where light weight, stiffness and strength are essential, such as aircraft, racing cars, ships and high performance sports equipment. »

Piloting precision is improved thanks to perfect control of flex and twist. Indeed, the 77 HM mast uses a symmetrical biconvex profile at the top which maximizes its resistance to flex thanks to its curvature. The chord is relatively long at the top, which completely blocks torsion. The feeling of rigidity is truly amazing. It doesn’t flinch. In surfing we place the foil where we want, even in the most committed curves we keep total control. In pumping, no loss of energy, we really go further, it’s much more dynamic. In the lower part, the profile of the mast is supercritical, to promote glide because it is a crucial point in pumping and surfing. In the end we go faster with a lower pumping rate and we follow the wave effortlessly, it’s really amazing!

Piloting precision is improved thanks to perfect control of flex and twist. The HM (High Modulus) coupled with its stringer increases the performance of this mast tenfold. The decrease in bending is around 30% and the decrease in torsion is around 40% compared to the V2 carbon mast, yet of excellent quality. More rigidity means more control in pumping and carving, resulting in easier wave connections and a rail to rail that’s even more instinctive.

Self-Tightening conical fitting

The conical fitting at the lower end of the mast allows the mast to be mounted without play in the pro aluminum fuselage. The more you surf, the tighter it gets! And with its three screws, you are sure that nothing will move. This mast/plate is made of one piece. You therefore have no play, neither at the top nor at the bottom of the mast, which guarantees impeccable piloting quality.

Pre-preg carbon layups

The high modulus carbon and prepreg carbon layup is a model of its kind. The 50 layers of the mast are distributed in 5 angles to guarantee incredible dynamism. The return to its initial shape after effort is 4 times faster than on a standard mast. And the use of high modulus carbon drastically reduces deformations.

TORAY M40J high modulus carbon offers incredible stiffness. It is a high-end carbon that delivers high mechanical properties while remaining resistant. A carbon popular in aeronautics as well as for high-end sports equipment. Its mechanical characteristics such as its superior tensile strength and Young’s modulus make it possible to obtain exceptional performance on the water.

Good to know : “Young’s modulus, also called longitudinal modulus of elasticity, represents the resistance of a material to deformation, that is to say the capacity of a material to recover its initial shape after having been subjected to a stress . The higher the Young’s modulus, the stiffer and more resistant the material is to elastic deformation. For example, steel has a Young’s modulus of around 200 GPa, while high modulus carbon can have a Young’s modulus greater than 300 GPa which is therefore 10 times higher than fiberglass which is around 30 GPa.»

This huge piece is produced in a mold weighing more than 400 kg, operated by large machinery to protect people. More than 4 hours are needed to set all the layers in the perfect order. Then comes the moment of closing the mould, always impressive in terms of strength and precision. Finally, it is inserted into the heating press to compress it to 120 tons and heat it at 155°. The result will be a mast of rare rigidity.

The huge advantage of high-end carbon is its stiffness. To the point that it is not useful to put as much material as with other materials. Thus we gain a significant weight, almost 20% compared to aluminum. And beyond the measured weight, the dynamism brings a feeling of liveliness and therefore of incredible lightness.

A damaged insert: you can replace it in a few seconds and for a few euros. Easy. A shock in the rocks: you repair your mast as you would repair your board.

In summary, this carbon mast combines finesse, lightness and extreme rigidity to shred on your spot.

Treat yourself with a beautiful and super efficient carbon element.

Carbon HM Mast Technology

High Module Carbon offers unparalleled rigidity, representing the pinnacle of performance in our most advanced wings and masts, which face the most demanding structural constraints.

By combining High Module with Intermediate Module, we offer the best performance at the best price.

The products have no flex, the fibers are oriented along multiple axes to lock in bending and torsion, ensuring maximum responsiveness.

Thanks to pre-impregnated fibers, we can guarantee optimal resin usage, providing perfect cohesion at the lightest possible weight.

Each layer of carbon is carefully hand-assembled around a high-density hydrophobic foam core, in a steel mold. A central stiffener is integrated to increase rigidity without compromising on lightness.

The mold is then subjected to high pressure and heated to 150°C to solidify the carbon. The foam core, seeking to expand under the heat, ensures even compression between the carbon layers, ensuring a strong and durable structure.

Durability and repairability are at the heart of our development philosophy. Our foils are tested and proven by dozens of team riders, hundreds of employees, and thousands of customers worldwide. Even in case of damage, our products can be repaired multiple times, ensuring exceptional longevity.

Buying guide

For whom?

It is the mast for the most demanding, for meticulous users, for fine technicians, because it is the very best.

This mast is intended for experienced riders. We therefore invite you to take the greatest care of it and not to equip yourself with it if you are a beginner.

What is it for?

The length of 77cm is intended primarily for surf foiling and SUP foiling, it offers an ideal pumping amplitude, a lot of pop thanks to a longer resource and more aggressive curves without breaching.
It is also perfect for dock starting from a high pontoon and its dynamic qualities offer super efficient pumping.
It will also be very suitable for downwinders in small conditions which require being very high on the foil, especially since its rigidity allows the use of a large front wing.

Which HM mast size?

The 77cm:

  • In surf foiling / SUP foiling: it’s perfect in curves, pumping and the pop is stunning! Be careful if your spot is shallow, you might wanna turn to the 70 HM mast ?
  • In downwinds: in small conditions it’s great, if it’s too choppy you can get overwhelmed and need the 85 cm mast.
  • In wing foiling: it’s a bit short but it works very well and it can be handy on a trip.
  • In kite foiling: too small, to forget.

Which quiver?

This mast is suitable for all wings but we recommend mounting “high performance” wings on it to get the best out of it.

Foil positioning?

For GONG foils, place the plate in the rear third in surf, SUP and kite foiling, and in the middle of the US rails for wing foiling.

The more you move it forward, the more it makes the board pitch up. The further you move it backwards, the more the nose of the board dives.

Be careful not to move it too far forward. We often tend to forget to use the back foot, especially when we have a kite foil background. However, moving the foil back a little forces you to put more weight on the back foot and gives a more harmonious attitude and reduces effort.

Equipments

Screw kit :

  • 4 M6x30 torx screws with truss heads for the board.
  • 4 washers.
  • 4 square nuts for US-box.
  • 3 M6x30 torx screws with countersunk heads for the fuselage.

Warning

The practice of the sport Foil may expose you to serious injury. A poor mastering of foil may lead to cut, serious injury and/or including death for you and/or others.

Foil should be practiced by taking into consideration all kite user precautions that are associated with  the sport foil. Remember that a foil is long, cutting, and reaches high speeds. Getting hit by a foil, or hitting someone/thing can have dramatic consequences.

Always foil far from others, in a secure and safe waterscape without obstacles.

Foil is most often practiced in light winds which may cease to blow leading you to return to shore by swimming. As a consequence do not overestimate your your strength/capacity : never go further out than your skill and swimming capacities and wind conditions allow.

Always wear a helmet and life vest for floatation. Always wear a full body wetsuit.

When handling the foil, be careful not to cut yourself along the edges.

GONG is NOT responsable in case of any and all accidents implicating a foil GONG. The practice of Foil is undertaken under the complete responsibility of the foil User/Practioner.
