The battle for the kite-surf world title remains wide open after a weekend of upsets and breakthrough performances in Germany!
The event in Sylt was marked by challenging conditions, forcing the judges to focus heavily on freestyle during the opening rounds. The first GONG rider to enter the competition was Yaris Dell’Omo, who successfully advanced through his initial heats under his new GONG colors. The drama kicked off in Round 3 with shock exits from two of the sport’s biggest names: Matchu Lopes and Pedro Matos, who was leading the rankings just ahead of our team rider, Airton Cozzolino.
Kitesurfer: Airton, GONG team rider, on his Catch FSP 2X and Ayto Aramid.
More upsets on finals day
Airton’s hopes of climbing in the rankings were cut short when he was knocked out in the quarterfinals by Theo Demanez. What looked like an upset from the outside was actually a positive result for Airton, who is returning from a knee injury. His performance secures his second place in the rankings as he now looks ahead to the waves of Dakhla on October 8th.
Theo Demanez went on to claim his first-ever event victory, defeating Gabriel Benetton in the final. With this result, Benetton now takes over the lead in the overall standings.
The youth take center stage in Tarifa
All eyes now turn to the GKA Youth Kite World Championships, returning to the iconic shores of Tarifa, Spain, for five days of competition starting today! This single-stop event will crown the world’s best young riders in Twintip Freestyle and Kite-Surf across the U14, U16, and U19 categories.
