We’re excited to welcome our new team rider from Italy, who will join forces with Airton on the GKA Tour.
Welcome to the Team! How would you introduce yourself to our readers?
Hi, I’m Yaris Dell’omo, I’m 25 years old, and I’m from Rome, where I live and where I do most of my training. It’s not a very windy place in general, but by moving around a bit, it’s possible to get out on the water almost every day.
When and how did you get into board sports?
I started doing water sports when I was 6 years old with my brother, we started with surfing. Then my parents got into kitesurfing, and over time I gave it a try too, but at first I didn’t really enjoy it and I hardly practiced. Then, around the age of 15, we went on our first trip to Cape Verde, where I tried a surfboard (strapless) for the first time, and from that moment on, I never stopped kitesurfing. In 2021 I’ve started wing foiling too but just for fun.
What place do you call your home spot? How are the conditions over there?
My home spot is La Rambla in Maccarese, which is about 20 minutes from my house. In the summer, there’s usually some thermal wind almost every day, around 8–10 knots. In the winter, it gets windier more often and you can even find some really fun wave conditions. Let’s say that, by moving along the coast or heading to the lake, you can get out on the water almost every day.
Kitesurfer : Yaris, team rider GONG, with his Catch HDCC, Ayto Aramid DP and FeelX kite bar.
When was your first competition and how did it go?
My first competition was the GKA in Ponta Preta. I was really nervous and didn’t feel ready to compete, but in the end my father signed me up. I finished 17th. It was not a great result, but I had a lot of fun and it was an amazing experience.
What was your strongest result so far?
My best result at the national level was becoming Under 21 Champion in 2020, while at the international level, it was 5th place at the GKA in Sylt in 2023.
What’s your goal in competition?
My goal in competition is to keep pushing my level, have fun on the water, and show my style in every heat. Of course, I want to reach the podium, but for me, it’s just as important to enjoy the process and keep learning from every event.
What type of sessions motivate you the most right now? Any tricks you're working on?
I love wave sessions with all my friends and even more the freestyle ones, where we push each other to always do better. The tricks I’m currently working on are different types of kiteloops and the double front roll
What motivated you to join the GONG team?
Seeing GONG around has always attracted me, especially their strong team spirit at competitions and how they support each other. Their super innovative gear also really stands out, and I believe it will help me a lot in reaching my full potential.
Which GONG gear are you most excited about?
I can’t wait to try all my new gear, especially the new wave kites and the Catch HDCC. As for wing foiling, I’m super excited to test the new Droid Aramid X and the Ypra Freestyle V3.
Which GONG gear are you most excited about?
The next competition will be in Sylt, and it could be 100% freestyle or a mix of freestyle and wave. It will be my first event with GONG, and I can’t wait to get started. I’ll give it everything I’ve got.
Follow Yaris and the action in Sylt from August 26th until August 31st.
