FEEDBACK: FLUID L-H

Feedback from Kevin about the Fluid L-H in which he points out something important about high aspect front wings: to extract the full potential of these large wingspans, the stiffness of your mast is essential. An HM 85cm wing foil mast is essential.

“The Fluid L-H is incredible.”
“I ride in the San Francisco Bay. Typical wind is 15 to 20 knots with variable wind swell, and rare ocean waves that break at the mouth of the bay. Luckily, we also get regular big boat traffic and riding the wake is one of my favorite things to do. So the ideal foil is one that can glide and harness all sizes and shapes of swell.
The Fluid L-H nails it ! It is very fast but stall speed is also low so it glides forever and SO smoothly, enabling you to harness a wide range of swell sizes and shapes. I was so stoked. I could drift the wing and connect wind swell seemingly indefinitely.
The Fluid L-H carves intuitively and is playful in surfing the wake.
I was anxious about this because I have read other reviews on other forums that said the LH turns weird, or has excess resistance when committing to a carve. I did not experience that. However, I am riding with a 38H Fluid stab so maybe that accounts for different experiences. Also, I wonder if negative experiences can be attributed to a bending mast ? Just an unsubstantiated hypothesis but I wonder if the long and relatively flat wingspan of the Fluid LH necessitates a very stiff mast during carve maneuvers to minimize mast deflection. In any case, I thought it had an incredible surfing feel.
When riding a boat wake, I found that I could ride much further out from the peak than with my other foils (AR 8.1). I was able to ride the fourth and fifth series in the boat wake. The best I could do before with a bigger foil was 3rd wake, otherwise I needed the first and second wake (biggest) if I wanted to let my wing drift.
Overall, the Fluid is an incredibly efficient wing.
And I believe it is due to the unique characteristics of the profile shape. I noticed that this foil really comes alive when it is near the surface of the water. Once you bring it near the surface, the wing hooks up (sucks to the surface of the water) and accelerates dramatically. It becomes an entirely different wing when it is, as the GONG website puts it, “flirting” with the surface. I think the trade-off here is since the foil is able to harness so much of the waters surface wave energy, you can also feel a lot of the movement – probably another reason for why a very stiff mast is well-suited to this foil. All that being said, even in the roughest chop, it is no problem to handle, and this is a trade-off I am willing to take given how much wake riding it makes possible.
So in true addict fashion, every time I buy something new from GONG, I love it so much that I want more. Debating do I add a Fluid MH? Or maybe wait for the Ypra S? … or both…”
