INSIGHTS: MAX ROBINSON AND RIDING IN (VERY) LIGHT WIND
Our Team Rider notes how recent advancements in wing foil equipment are permanently reshaping our perception of what’s considered too...
The high modulus carbon fiber mast with absolute rigidity for large wings and a perfect drive!
A radical shape for absolute rigidity! A radical shape for absolute rigidity! The 86HM mast has been designed on the same basis as the 72HM mast, which is a reference in pumping practices and control of large wings. Profiles, dimensions, fillets… everything is carefully considered to ensure that your giant wing obeys your every command. Its length of 86cm, more oriented towards wing foiling, allows you to fully maximize the potential of your large front wing during your light wind sessions. Maneuvers, carves, and surfing without any flex or unwanted movements are on the agenda! Nothing will hold you back from having a blast with your giant wing. The use of large front wings can quickly apply tremendous stresses on a mast: the front wings are powerful, the control inputs are strong, and the expectations are high. Therefore, any deformation results in energy loss and a decrease in performance. This is where the 86HM Mast truly shines: even with a 186cm wing, you won’t feel any torsion or deformation! To achieve such a result, all the geometry of the mast has been optimized in this perspective. Its upper profile is almost rectangular (although profiled) in order to keep the thickness on the entire chord. This geometry maximizes rigidity in flexion, but especially in torsion. Torsion is a horrible feeling when using a large front wing. This mast is the answer to this concern that harms the drive and causes strong loss of energy. The lower profile of the mast is a light supercritical profile, which promotes water flows and therefore glide which remains a crucial point in light wind. However, this profile is bombed enough for its curvature to act like a beam that completely blocks flexion. The wing fillets around the top plate were completely redesigned to distribute the efforts on their whole length. This geometry maximizes torsion rigidity. On the 86 HM, the efforts are distributed on almost 20 cm instead of 15 cm on the 85 HM mast. Carbon fibers transmit more energy to the board. The result is stunning!
Note: The fuselage is sold separately from the HM mast.

Buying guide
The 86HM mast is perfect for those who want an ultra-rigid mast for large wings, specifically for light wind sessions in wing foiling.
It is also the perfect ally of a big rider in wing foiling looking for maximum rigidity.
This is a mast for the most demanding users, the fine tuners that take care of their gear, because it is the best.
This mast is intended for experienced riders. We therefore invite you to take great care of it and not equip yourself with it if you are just getting started.
Its shape, designed to withstand very high stresses without any deformation, clearly makes it suitable for navigation with giant wings. The use of such wings can quickly apply tremendous stresses on a mast because these front wings are extremely powerful, requiring strong control inputs and with high expectations. Therefore, any deformation results in energy loss and a decrease in performance. The 86HM mast is the solid answer to this challenge for wing foiling.

The 89 cm:

This mast is suitable for all wings but we recommend using it with high performance wings to make the most of it.
It is on large front wings that it will prove to be decisive.
For GONG foils, place the top plate at the rear third of the US rails in surfing, SUP and kite, and in the middle of the US rails in wing foiling.
The more you move it forward, the more it makes the board pitch up. The further you move it backwards, the more the nose of the board dives.
Be careful not to move it too far forward. We often tend to forget to use the back foot, especially when we have a kite foil background. However, moving the foil back a little forces you to put more weight on the back foot and gives a more harmonious attitude and reduces effort.
