NEWS: ACTION RESUMES AT THE SUP WORLD CHAMPIONSHIPS!
After the decisive final for the APP Longboard World Title, the heats resumed at the Grand Canaria SUP Open with the SUP Surf category!
Yesterday the action resumed for the competitors gathered in Las Palmas with the SUP Surf category. Among them we find our team riders Leco and Moritz who swapped their NFA FSP Pro from the day before for pure shortboard shapes. No more nose rides on the program but snaps, cutbacks, airs and the entire repertoire of top turns that our riders are capable of in free sessions with their Alley and Karmen FSP Pro.
For this first day of competition in the category, only the first two rounds could be run with both our team riders making it through to the third round. Moritz debriefs this first day:
“Today we started the main event of SUP Surf, head high waves with a bit of wind-chop. I was using the 6´10 Karmen. Round 1 started and Leco was able to win his heat connecting some long waves and linking various maneuvers, so he directly advanced into round 3.
For me the heat started out slow, with everyone catching a set wave except me and then making several mistakes with priority. I had one nice wave where I could link several turns and finish on the beach. Then the ocean went flat until the last minute of the heat where I could get another set wave but was a little bit too deep to perform on the open face, at the end I was missing less than 1pt to advance straight into round 3.
Later on the day I competed in round 2 with really low tide and deteriorating conditions, again the heat started out super slow where I did not catch any wave in the first 15 minutes of the heat. Then I managed to take 2 average waves that were enough to secure my spot in the 3rd round.”
Pending an improvement in conditions, the competition will not resume today. The round 3 heat between our team riders and the Spaniard Juan de los Reyes could take place on Sunday morning if the forecast comes to life. Follow their results in our magazine.
