The high performance and radical shortboard to shred without limits.

Presentation

The Alley FSP Pro are true competition boards, designed for podiums and to push your limits always further : rollers, top turns, slash, powerful cut backs, airs and powerful waves. In the larger sizes you will discover its innate qualities in an easier form factor, with more width and volume. Easy and punchy. It is the board aimed at those looking for a fluid surf, all while keeping some length for easy paddling and scoring as much waves as possible during a competition heat.

L’Ours has totally revamped the shape of the Alley to push its performances even further. The 2022 version has more rocker, more kick tail and thinner rails for even more radically. It is also slightly larger and the fins placement has been adjusted so as not to compromise the ease of ride.

The shape is fast, really surfy and available in 6 sizes : 7’2, 7’4, 7’6, 7’8, 8’1 and 8’6 so that every competitor can find the board that is just right for him. The two bigger sizes can be considered comfortable for « everyone ».

Shape
Outline

The board keeps its 100% radical outline, with good underfoot width when paddling and insanely small OFO.

The flow has also been totally reworked with a width at the leash plug that has almost been cut in half !!! The volume has been gently pushed at the front and center of the board. It simply looks amazing, and oh so sharp !

The deck is even more domed than before to get thinner rails all along the board. There is volume at the center while still keeping a very thin waist, giving it elegance and performance.

Nose

The pointed nose is also less obtrusive in tight curves on a steep slope. The lesser surface allows for a lighter front third : Radicality is boosted and the liveliness of the board is insane.

Tail

Its round tail gives it more freedom in curves to max out fluidity and get vertical in hollow sections. That allow you to radicalize your turns while still rolling the curves. The board is less centered and much more maneuverable. Which is not negligible in competition, and also in free-surfing! To describe it as best as possible, we can also say that this board is our most efficient when it comes to backside surfing, which might very well be the most technical aspect on a SUP.

That is, everyone looking to shred hard! We love its natural rail to rail, so very close to the behaviour of a competition shortboard, and that round tail is simply magical.  Its insane drive in powerful waves is only matched by its lip destroying pivot.

Rocker

The rocker gains some shapeliness for more confort on the way down, but also so that the board naturally fits into the curve, without using stalls to cheat. It really surfs on the rail.

Hull

The hull has been refined, year after year, on these shapes by L’Ours :

  • A very light concave at the nose (slightly convex) that starts early and focuses the flow for stability and grip.
  • A simple deep concave at the center to steady the board when paddling and channeling the flow towards the fins to maximize lift and drive with a very good front foot grip.
  • A double concave at the fins which will stick to water and tunnel the flow to the outer fins, aiming for maximum speed!
  • A slight V with a double concave at the tail to release the flow of water while giving the board a loose rail to rail.

This reworked and active hull gives it 50% more performance compared to a flat hull. It might not seem essential but it is crucial to get the best out of the rest of the shape. In a nutshell, the outline spreads the load on water and the hull dictates the directional flow of water.

Rails

The rails work in concert with the outline and the hull to offer optimal water penetration, nothing is left to chance :

  • The rail at the nose is recessed to avoid mistakes. It does not hang on to water and allows for total directional freedom on steeper slopes, while softening contact when paddling.
  • At the center, the rail has a more cutting edge to guide the board and give better balance when paddling.
  • The rail stays recessed but with a sharper edge right in front of the fins. As soon as you are past the find, it becomes harsher and more square, which gives extra precision in curves by defining lift angles, which amount to the angles of inclination in the water. That will allow the board to naturally find the optimum inclination when responding to your input : not too deep or too shallow, just right for maximum grip, control and responsiveness. We really pivot around the tail by letting the rail bite into the water until water reaches its release point at the fin, and just behind it we grip !
  • The vertical rail at the tail allows for easy take off for even more speed.

Buying guide

For Whom?

You have to want the purest, hardest drive in SUP. Obviously you will need passion and motivation.

A body in excellent working order is a real plus on an Alley. If not, it might turn into a nightmare.

All in all, this is a board that you only look at after a few years of SUP, and when you are very sporty. You have to master the 3D balance, especially: lateral plus FWD/RWD.

What is it for?

Verticality is the credo of an Alley.

This round tail gives it the freedom to go for any curve, from the cleanest to the craziest.

Avoid the chop, it’s hellish.

Which size?

  • The 7’2 is best for pros up to 65kg.
  • The 7’4 is best for pros up to 75kg.
  • The 7’6 is best for pros up to 85kg.
  • The 7’8 is starting to settle down, ideal for those under 90kg.
  • The 8’1 is cool for those under 90kg who are not very sporty and want comfort.
  • The 8’6 is easy for those under 100kg who are not very sporty and want comfort.

Do not ‘over liter’ this board. Too much volume will give it an unpleasant tumbling effect while a little water on the deck behind the heels will stall it.

Which board bag?

Quiver partners ?

The Alley is most certainly the last frontier before regular surfing in the SUP world.

It will usually be completed with a small wave board. Either a Karmen to not make too big a difference in feeling/driving. Or a Mob to shred in the mush.

Few people like hardcore ShortSUPs and LongSUPs. If this is your case, it will go very well with all the LongSUP but probably even better with a Zero or NFA that offer modern and lively drives.

The Alley will have a hard time finding its place in a surfer’s quiver because it’s the board of someone who excels seriously in SUP, and who won’t necessarily have the time to invest in the heart of the surfing program which is exactly the same as the Alley : the Shortboard perf board.

Which Fin Setup?

Tri-Fin is the best option on small Alleys. Quad works very well on the larger sizes. All the classic setups work, not much to gain getting too exotic. A good set of Performers will be perfect. Switch to Carvers if you want more directional stability (control).

Toledos and Wilsons are fine, Fannings are more powerful for the same size. Bear in mind that these Fins are only sold as Tri-fin sets, which would need to be completed with retail Quads rears.

Take your recommended Fin size or just above it. No less. You’re going to need the grip to exploit it.

Reminder of the recommended FCS II Fin sizes :

  • XS for those under 55 kg / 120 Lbs
  • S for 55 kg – 70 kg / 120 Lbs – 155 Lbs
  • M for 65 kg – 80 kg / 145 Lbs – 175 Lbs
  • L for 75 kg – 90 kg / 165 Lbs – 200 Lbs
  • XL for those over 85 kg / 190 Lbs.

Note that even before the shape, it is the material of the Fins that makes the performance. Keep in mind that the stiffer a Fin is, the better it works. Yes, a pro needs good Fins, but an amateur also needs to go fast because speed is the basis of all manoeuvres.

Never go shorter, except when kiting.

A surfer who wants more speed, to make more beautiful curves, to surf more cleanly, to work on his speed gain, will take one size above the recommended size.

In a setup that mixes sets, consider that the laterals do the grip and acceleration; and the backs do the pivot, drive and some grip. So, focus on good laterals that fit your need for power and speed.

Flat inner-sided Quad rears have more grip and less glide. A stronger grip, but a Vmax and a mania one hair below the curved inner faces (20/80 for example). Go for the flat sides despite everything.

And too big of Quad rears totally block the handling of your Board, giving you the impression that its tail floats too much in the curves. Hateful. Better too small than too big.

How long should your paddle be?

Your size, no more and no less, ideally a Pro version for a lighter paddle. You can make it a little shorter if you’re aiming towards a radical ride. Some people cut it to eyebrow height.

Which leash ?

Take the length of your board: 7′ or 8′.

In less than shoulder size waves, a reduced diameter (6mm) will make you gain a lot of speed. Above, you must have 7mm minimum.

Check its condition before each session and change it every year. This is your lifejacket and should be treated as such.

Equipments

The Alley FSP Pro are equipped with our premium 5mm thick 3D Function pad for maximum grip and comfort. This non-slip deck coating is “smart” as it provides different sensations in different parts of the deck, with groovings and openings designed for proprioception. Your feet are better positioned and informed of their exact position to give you a more precise surf.

An ergonomic carrying handle on the deck makes it easy to handle the board out of the water. It also allows you to get the board out of the water with only one hand, which is handy!

In addition, we set these boards up with 3 FCS II boxes on the small sizes and 5 FCS II boxes on the bigger ones. The anchoring is firm and therefore the most efficient and solid. It is simply the highest standard of fin box on the market. You can therefore set up your quad with all types of fins according to your desires and your surfing style by accessing an almost endless catalog of top-of-the-range fins.

The pressure relief screw is automatic. It is made up of a waterproof membrane that allows air to pass through. It will handle the common variations in pressure between the outside and the inside of your board. The durability gain is considerable, without you having to worry about it.

The leash plug is indestructible as it is glued into the high density PVC sandwich of the deck. The guarantee of not losing your board in the rocks for example, nor of seeing water seep through the plug because the PVC is waterproof.

To summarize the features of the Alley

  • 3 FCS II Glass Flex Carver L fins/118 mm.
  • 3 FCS II boxes of high resistance reinforced with high density PVC on the 7’2, 7’4 and 7’6 and 5 FCS II boxes on the other sizes to allow a quad fin set-up.
  • 5 mm pad: deck covering designed for great comfort and absolute grip.
  • Integrated central carry handle on the board deck.
  • Leash plug Concrete fixed at tail to never lose your board.
  • Automatic vent screw. (LINK TO THE HOW TO)
