GEAR: WHICH FOIL SHOULD YOU CHOOSE TO START SURF FOILING?

Choosing the right foil to take-off early and progress quickly

Starting surf foil is first and foremost about learning how to fly. The secret isn’t speed or radical maneuvers, it’s lift and stability at take-off. Just like in surfing, a lack of technique can be compensated with comfortable, forgiving equipment. In foiling, this means choosing a front wing that generates strong lift at low speed, with a profile thick enough to take off early and remain stable.

When you're starting out, you're not always perfectly positioned on the wave. Sometimes you're lacking speed. With the right foil, that’s not a problem: it generates lift even at low speed and allows you to fly without forcing it.

Need a complete setup?

If you’re starting from scratch equipment-wise, we recommend going with a complete pack including mast, front wing, stabilizer, fuselage, hardware, and carrying bag, offered at a preferential price.

If you already own a beginner setup, for example in wing foil, you can absolutely use it to start surf foiling, provided you adapt the mast. The required lift is similar to early wing foil sessions (if you started wing foiling with an X-Over XL setup, it will work perfectly for surf foil as well). In this case, you simply need to complement your setup with a mast of suitable length for surf foiling.

What is the right mast length for learning?

An experienced surf foiler typically uses a mast between 70 and 77 cm. To start smoothly and avoid intimidation, you can begin with a shorter mast of 55 or 62 cm. You’ll become familiar with the sensation of flight more easily and build confidence faster.

An aluminum mast offers more than enough performance to begin with. However, the responsiveness and light weight of a carbon mast, or the spectacular stiffness of a Carbon HM mast, will inevitably catch your eye at some point.

Which front wing should you choose?

  • X-Over: the benchmark for starting with confidence

The X-Over is the ideal choice if you are a complete beginner.

Highly lifting, ultra stable, and forgiving, it makes first take-offs easier and forgives positioning mistakes. Its predictable behavior allows you to focus on what matters most: understanding pitch, managing flight height, and linking your first runs.

It’s the perfect wing to learn stress-free and build solid foundations.

  • Ascent: the natural progression

Already have some foil experience? Or do you progress quickly in new sports?

The Ascent is an excellent next step. It maintains strong low-speed lift while offering more glide and responsiveness than the X-Over. You keep reassuring stability, but with greater performance potential.

  • Curve: surf feeling from your very first turns

The Curve H is aimed at riders who already have a solid foil background.

It remains accessible, but its more curved outline delivers a more playful turning behavior. Lift builds progressively, rail-to-rail transitions are fluid, and the overall feeling is more “surf-oriented.” It is also faster than the X-Over and Ascent, and its wingspan provides enhanced glide.

What size front wing?

Your surf foil take-off mainly depends on the power of the waves pushing you at take-off. Since learning typically happens in small conditions, we recommend an XL foil for most beginners. In flight, the larger size helps you maintain lift and possibly connect your first waves.

The limitation of a foil that is too large becomes noticeable in powerful waves, where it becomes more physical to control and avoid being overpowered.

For lighter riders under 65–70 kg (143–154 lbs), we recommend a size L in surf foil.

Which stabilizer should you choose?

When selecting a stabilizer, the principle is to match it with your front wing. Once you’ve identified the front wing you need, choosing the stabilizer follows naturally.

For example, we primarily pair a Curve XL front wing with a Curve XL stabilizer. That’s what we recommend when starting out. As you progress, however, you can move away from this pairing to fine-tune the character of your setup.

Our recommendation

In all cases, prioritize a lifting and confidence-inspiring wing. Speed will come later. What matters at the beginning is taking off early, staying stable, and multiplying successful runs.
