All our Tail Wings are now available in Upper or Lower versions.
Both systems follow the same principle: providing a rigid, adjustable and hydrodynamically integrated connection between the fuselage and the Tail Wing.
But your riding style should guide your choice between the two. Here’s why 👇
Upper S Tail Shaft, 0° Upper Titanium Shim Tail and Ypra Surf Carve S Tail Wing above a setup with Lower L Tail Shaft, 0° Lower Shim Tail and Veloce XTR S Tail Wing.
The respective advantages of these architectures:
- The Upper architecture positions the Tail Wing above the Shim Tail. It provides greater protection for the rear wing against contact with the bottom.
It is particularly well suited to beach starts, surf foiling, freestyle, wave riding and riding in shallow water.
- The Lower architecture positions the Tail Wing below the Shim Tail. This places it farther away from the water surface and the disturbed wake of the Front Wing.
It therefore reduces the risk of ventilation and promotes exceptionally clean glide for downwind, pumping, freefly or high-performance freeride.
This architecture also provides cleaner flow over the upper surface, which is no longer partially covered by the shaft. The quality of the flow over this surface is critical to the performance of the wing.
In return, a Lower Tail Wing sits closer to the bottom and requires greater care when getting in and out of the water or riding in shallow areas.
In short, a Lower architecture takes performance up another notch, while an Upper architecture is the safer choice for spots or disciplines where contact with the bottom is frequent.

Do you need a different fuselage for a Lower or Upper configuration?
No. The V3 fuselage is compatible with both Upper and Lower Tail Shafts.
These Tail Shafts are available in 12K Carbon Clear Team Series construction or 3K Texalium Purple Clear Pro Team Series construction.
For a Micro V3 Atmo fuselage, choose the Upper or Lower Tail Shaft for Micro V3 fuselage.
Can you mix Upper and Lower components?
No. The entire rear section must use the same architecture:
- an Upper Tail Wing can only be used with an Upper Tail Shaft and Upper Shim Tail;
- a Lower Tail Wing can only be used with a Lower Tail Shaft and Lower Shim Tail.
In short, the V3 fuselage accepts both architectures, but the Tail Shaft, Shim Tail and Tail Wing components must all be either Upper or Lower.
