GONG | Kite Unik
Shape
Single strut design

The Unik benefits from a single strut design that is 30% lighter than other kites. This allows for much simpler riding in light wind conditions with sufficient power.

Even after a crash, the Unik retains its shape thanks to its inflatable central strut, which doesn't bend easily. This guarantees a quick and easy relaunch.

Hybrid C-Shape

The Unik is a hybrid C shape: a modern and dynamic shape that delivers maximum performance while remaining simple and lightweight.

The turning radius is reduced. The kite is precise and responsive to boost feel and performance. This balance between responsiveness and profile stability allows for very safe default settings, resulting in ultra-clean bar feedback and effortless micrometric control. The feel remains direct , allowing you to become one with the kite.

Short 6-point bridle without pulleys

Major development 2026: 6-point bridle without pulleys.

Isometric triangulation and centered front lines for uniform tension and consistent pull. The feel is direct, crisp, and reliable. The kite is more stable, more locked in, and performs better.

The reduced diameter bridles minimize drag while maintaining impeccable mechanical characteristics. The kite is noticeably more streamlined in flight.

Your Unik also adapts to your feel thanks to the adjustments on the back.

The new short bridle system improves feedback and the feel is much more direct. Everything is more intuitive, allowing you to be in sync with your kite.

Reactive tips

Thinner, more advanced tips, optimized surface. Clean and smooth rotation on the ear, without backstalling.

Clean loops and increased maneuverability in light wind, with very reliable behavior in surf.

Moderate aspect ratio

The Unik 2026's moderate 4.5 ratio offers a very reliable feel that will allow you to progress without stress.

With this kite, we have the best balance between power output, speed, and flight stability.

The kite's power is applied as soon as you activate it in the wind window. You feel a strong connection to the air. The feedback is crisp and allows for easy stabilization. This linear power delivery is combined with precise bridle control, enabling instant depowering. Everything is under control, especially when foiling.

Everything in this optimized ratio is designed for smooth kiting, to fully enjoy the low range and to immediately find your bearings: the Unik 2026 gives the impression of being known by heart from the first outing.

Easy relaunch

The Unik's highly curved leading edge and light weight make it easy to rotate the kite on the water, positioning it on one wingtip for easy relaunch. Pulling a back line is all it takes to pivot. This ability is essential in certain conditions and when you decide to push the limits of light wind.

The kite is also perfectly comfortable relaunching backwards by pulling hard on both back lines: essential in less than 8 knots.

Kite Unik Dacron / 4 m² / WHITE

  • Single-strut design : The 2026 Unik features a lighter and more modern single-strut design. This single-strut concept offers low weight, remarkable stability in light winds, easy inflation, and exceptionally easy relaunching. The central strut perfectly maintains its profile in case of a crash, even in very light winds, greatly enhancing safety. And it remains as easy to fly as a typical 3-strut kite.

  • Hybrid C shape : a modern, stable, dynamic, and predictable design. Projection is significantly increased (from 65% to 68%), combined with a much more open arc: more glide, more usable surface area in the kite's core, even more reliable flight, and more power for better performance in light winds. The turning radius remains small: the Unik turns beautifully, with incredibly clean bar feedback.

  • The increased aspect ratio , going from 4.3 to 4.5, provides a real gain in efficiency and speed. The kite crosses the wind window more quickly, points higher upwind, and offers more responsive support in light wind. It becomes more dynamic while retaining the very predictable feel that characterizes the Unik. This higher aspect ratio also improves lift when jumping in light wind: pops are cleaner, the lift curve is improved, and landings are smoother.

  • Increased projected surface area (65% to 68%) centralizes most of the power at the heart of the kite. This feature greatly enhances support in light wind conditions: the kite holds firmly in the air, remains stable in lulls, and presents a constant surface area to the wind, making it easier to maintain a steady course, get planing, and relaunch. This more centralized surface area also provides excellent stability during gentle loops, a natural drift when sheeting out, and superb performance in highly gusty or offshore winds.
  • A wider arc than its previous version immediately increases power and lift. The kite generates very clean and precise traction in the hands.
  • A tolerant profile for maximum stability in high end and in case of piloting errors, and to allow for great catch in loops.

  • Thin leading edge in the center for a fast and thin kite in the air, while maintaining cross-section on the tips to retain surface area and rigidity during high stresses in moves or in high range.

  • Sufficient but not excessive lift provides good low-end power and also good acceleration, increasing apparent wind. This reduces the need to work the kite, making it less technical, and requiring less kite size. A smaller kite is more responsive, lighter, easier to relaunch, etc.

  • Outline freeride : curved leading edge for maximum maneuverability and "automatic" relaunch. The kite can roll on the water to return to the takeoff position by gently pulling a rear line.

  • Segmented strut : more rigid at the connection with the leading edge: very crisp behavior, more power for the same surface area, more stability in the high range.

  • Thinner, rounder, less square, and slightly forward-positioned wingtips . This evolution significantly improves handling in light winds and makes wingtip turns extremely clean because they don't slow the flight. The kite pivots smoothly around the center of the surface with precision, without overloading or backstall. Handling becomes more direct and intuitive, while still maintaining the necessary forgiveness in light winds.

  • The tip shape avoids internal twisting, resulting in a kite with strong rotation on the wingtips and minimal brake input. This maintains a fast-rotating kite that doesn't backstall, especially in challenging conditions (below 6-8 knots).

  • Light and adjusted spinnaker tension on each section to optimize kite handling: more responsive.

  • The bar feedback is incredibly easy to use : you always know exactly where your kite is thanks to the constant, precise bar pressure. It's never absent. You can really "hold on" to the bar without making any major mistakes. Its constant feedback prevents over-tightening the bar and making silly errors.

  • Significant depower for a wide wind range and a safe feel. It truly offers full power when sheeted in and a real power release when depowered.

  • The kite's shape is "self-stabilizing" thanks to its low aspect ratio and deep draft, which effectively "catches" the air. The set-back wingtips distribute the weight slightly towards the rear of the kite to prevent dives and stalls. The result is a predictable and stable kite for maximum safety.

  • The 6-point bridle without pulleys transforms precision into a bar control system. Isometric triangulation distributes tension evenly across the entire arc, resulting in a very locked-in, consistent, and extremely stable kite in both gusts and light winds. Steering becomes much more direct, with no latency and very consistent pull, providing rider security, especially when foiling or surfing.

Buying guide

For whom?

The Unik is truly the kite for everyone. Easy and lightweight, it will simplify sessions for progressing kiters.

Playful and fun, it will be loved by the pros. It gains in maneuverability and therefore meets the needs of pros when they want a super light and high-performance kite.

It's really the kite that suits everyone because of its flying qualities.

For what ?

The Unik is based entirely on the absence of constraints. Light, easy, efficient, it will be used in all programs like a kite that facilitates low-end winds.

Foiling, of course, surfing, but also relaxed freeriding, not to mention travel. This kite can do it all and is ridden with a small kite to simply enjoy a maneuverable, powerful, and lightweight kite.

You can also ask the absolute maximum of it, and you'll be surprised by its response: precise kite loops, significant hang time, and wow-worthy responsiveness. It's a truly efficient kite, supercharged by its lightness.

Understanding our kite range:

  • Display: the freeride kite for rapid progression.
  • Vertigo: the high-performance 3-strut kite for all tricks, loops, big air, surfing, foiling.
  • Ayto: the ultimate 5-strut kite for big air and aggressive kite loops.
  • Unik: the lightweight single-strut freeride kite for lightwind, foiling and waves.
  • Strutless: the super light kite for light wind and high-performance freeriding.
  • Elips: the ultimate kite in the waves.

What size?

Powerful and single-strut, this is of course a kite best ridden in light wind conditions. Far from being a constraint, it's actually a pleasure to fly a reassuring and maneuverable kite.

Choose your kite by following our recommendations below. Wind ranges always depend on your weight, skill level, and the board under your feet!

Bar size:

The length of your bar will directly impact the overall feel of your kite. Remember that the longer your bar, the easier it will be to turn your kite. This is especially important when using larger kites, particularly in very light winds, to maintain good responsiveness. The increased leverage compensates for this natural loss of responsiveness.

Keep in mind that, conversely, the smaller the kite, the faster it will turn! Therefore, using a smaller bar allows you to balance the kite's behavior and make it more responsive. You must take these parameters into account when choosing your bar size and adapt your riding style to your preferred feel and the conditions you encounter.

  • If we are looking for smooth and progressive steering, we must "undersize" the size of our bar.

  • If you prefer fast and responsive steering, you should choose a larger bar.

The key size is the 52cm bar. This is the most versatile bar and the one to choose if you only want one bar for a 7-9-12, 8-11, or 8-10-13 quiver.

When you have an extensive kite quiver, it's essential to also have a quiver of bars to maintain a balanced feel when switching from a small kite to a larger one. Also note that having two bars reduces wear and tear on the parts by half!

Here are our recommendations:

The recommendations above are based on the behavior of GONG kites. Since our bars are compatible with a wide range of kites, you can adapt your choice according to the type of kite you use.

Line lengths:

Your FeelX bar comes standard with 80cm pre-lines, 19m of lines and 3m extensions already mounted.

The original setup is the most versatile and will be your best choice for 90% of your sessions.

By playing with its lengths, or even modifying them with our extensions (sold separately), you boost its versatility even more!

  • 22m lines:
The "standard" lines length allows for a more progressive and predictable feel (recommended setting for progressing kiters). Your wind window will be larger, thus providing more power at takeoff. This is the preferred setting for low and mid-range conditions, and for everyday freeride use.

  • 19m lines:
Shorter lines offer a more direct kite response, increasing its responsiveness. The wind window will be shorter. This is the perfect setup for advanced kiters, ideal for wave riding or foiling, for added agility.

If you choose to sail with short lines, you will also gain comfort in high range.

Note that 22m and 19m are not extreme line lengths and remain a fine adjustment to your piloting feel.

Frequent questions
Does the Unik fly in 6 knots?

The Unik is particularly lightweight, without sacrificing its durability!

With its pronounced draft, it stays in place at the zenith, never drifting back. You can get in the water without worrying about it stalling. A lull? A downloop and it's back up to the zenith as if nothing happened.

This behavior is fantastic when you're foiling in less than 10 knots, for example. With a 3-strut kite, it quickly becomes either technical or a real hassle. With the Unik, it's a non-issue because it stays in the air.

Re-launching is also greatly facilitated by the weight reduction and the shape of the Unik.

Finally, not only does it fly in less than 6 knots, but it is also super cool to fly in this light wind, linking full speed tacks and crazy moves.

Is the Unik effective in strong winds?

Without a doubt, provided you ask it to do what it likes.

If you want to score out of this world kite loops: no.

But if you ask it to surf, with a magical glide, it will give you a feeling of freedom through its lightness that many will love.

This isn't a kite you're going to ride overpowered at Mach 12. No, it's a kite that's easy to fly, that gives you the power to ride super cleanly.

It's a kite that we particularly like in light wind conditions. So, a small kite relative to the wind, which will give you incredible maneuverability.

Its impeccable behavior makes it a very safe kite for riding in the waves, including in strong winds.

Which freeride kite should I choose?

In our comprehensive range, we have various freeride kites. Depending on your conditions and skill level, you should choose one model over another.

  • Display: The ultimate freeride kite, it's the most versatile model regardless of skill level or conditions! With a good low-end and a stable 3-strut shape in strong winds, the Display has a very wide wind range, always with unparalleled ease of use! Intuitive freeriding, no matter the wind strength.

  • Vertigo: High-performance 3-strut freeriding! Like the Display and Unik, the Vertigo lets you have a blast on any board. However, with its precise handling and powerful traction, this kite is best suited for advanced kiters. The Vertigo is fast, reacts instantly, and delivers an impressive jump boost. Freeriding, yes, but in supercharged mode!

  • Unik: This kite is designed for freeride, but primarily to facilitate kiting in light winds or when underpowered. Its single-strut shape provides impressive lightness and excellent stability across the entire wind window. You feel safe even in winds as low as 10 knots. If you frequently kitesurf in light wind conditions and enjoy switching between twin-tip, surfing, and foiling, this model is perfect for you!

What inflation pressure?

The recommended pressure is indicated in the table below:

Several factors must be taken into account:

  • An underinflated kite will be unstable and difficult to control in gusty winds. Relaunching will also be more complicated with a kite that doesn't hold its shape.

  • An overinflated kite will increase the risk of explosion during a crash and will cause the seams and materials of your kite to wear out more quickly.

  • If you keep your kite inflated in the sun for a long period, we recommend deflating it slightly to reduce the risk of seam fatigue.

Kite with or without pulleys?

The Unik is a lightweight and accessible kite. Its pulley-free bridle system, like that of the Elips, gives it a very responsive feel. Conversely, the presence of pulleys would reduce the responsiveness of this kite.

We therefore opted for a short bridle without a pulley. This type of bridle, simple and proven, offers control and forgiveness, while remaining simple to limit wear and provide an added sense of security.

Bar compatibility?

The Unik was developed to work with the FeelX bar. Our bar has 4 lines of the same length and a low V at the front.

The attachments for the lines at the bridle level are:

  • Kite-side loops for the front lines

  • Kite-side knots for the back lines

How do I maintain my kiteboarding equipment?

To increase the lifespan of your equipment, how you use it and its regular maintenance will be very important.

A key point when using your kite: do not leave it inflated for long periods of time without being used! The flapping of the fabric in the wind can cause premature wear of the materials, as can prolonged exposure to UV rays.

Frequent rinsing of your kite under running water is also discouraged. The chlorine in tap water can damage the surface treatments of your kite. Instead, you should store your kite dry and remove any excess sand.

Always rinse your tiller with clean water to remove sand and salt. Remember to also open the safety release to rinse the inside. Let it dry before reassembling it.

If the slat or leading edge is punctured, use your repair kit, or consult our spare parts to order the replacement part.

Regularly inspect the condition of your kite. Look for any holes or cuts and have them repaired before they get worse.

If you have damaged your kite due to misuse, you can have it repaired directly at the GONG workshop by contacting our sailmaker: HERE

More information on how to maintain your kite can be found on the forum.
