Security in kitesurfing

Safety in kitesurfing is paramount. Here are some recommendations given by the GONG staff to make sure your kitesurfing experience goes as smoothly as possible.

Protect yourself in case of a fall.

Always put your hands and arms in front of your face and head. One day or another it will save you stitches. Think of using a helmet.

Protect others

Do not jump on a wave with others already on it and stick to priorities. And if you have the priority, you still have to avoid the collision. So, do not steer towards others, do not go near them and yell that they’re in your way…

Never pull on the lines of a crashed Kite.

If she goes again she can cut through your fingers in a micro second. It’s very common.

Do not crash your Kite.

A kite must fly. This is the basic rule. If it goes down this should alarm you. It’s not a normal thing to drop it in the water. And it’s ten times worse if it falls on the beach or on people. Real danger..

If you have a doubt: don’t do it.

It is better to be dry and alive than the opposite (oh no it does not work …) you catch my drift.

Do not trim to take off.

Some trim the Kite to release the power. But they remove as much of the Kites steering capacity. So the Kite is an inert sack that will make react haphazardly and put you more in danger than if it was full power.

Do not let a non Kiter help you.

You would put everyone in danger. Ask people about their skills before asking for help.

Water is your safety zone. If the wind rises without giving you a landing solution: stay in the water with the wing on the tip at the edge of the window. Land is your greatest danger.
