Last week saw the first-ever French Wingfoil Championship, with Freestyle and Slalom-Race events held in highly variable conditions throughout. Freestyle began on Tuesday with a light Tramontane, making the Leucate spot fairly flat.
Our rider Bastien Escofet, fresh from an intense month after several stages of the World Championship in Race, had to show great adaptability to juggle between the two disciplines he competed in, especially given the unpredictable wind conditions. It was only on Friday, during the first day of Race competition, that a steady southeast wind finally decided to blow.
Bastien chose his Pulse DP UPE Aramid 6m for the first long-distance race: “The wind was light at the start but quickly picked up in intensity offshore.” He won this round ahead of his teammate Julien Rattotti and Mateo Dussarps, both equipped with Pulse DP UPE Aramid wings. A 100% GONG podium in the wing category!

For the second race, the wind finally picked up: “I kept my 6m Pulse DP, which had been performing well until then. The start was tricky because of the swell, but I managed to take the lead right from the start. I was in great shape with my 6m, and we had gusts to over 22 knots."
Bastien maintained his lead throughout the competition, winning both Slalom-Race rounds.
By late afternoon, ideal conditions finally set in for Freestyle. "After those rounds, I had only 10 minutes to switch gear, but with my caddy Polo's help, I managed to get in a quick practice before the heat!”. In 20-25 knots of wind, Bastien chose his Droid UPE Aramid 4m. Thanks to his performance, he shone in the finals, finishing 2nd behind Noé Cuyala. Meanwhile, our team rider Lou Thouin put in a fine performance, finishing in the top 4 in the Open and 2nd in his category.

Unfortunately, lacking sufficient conditions, the following days did not allow another round of the Slalom-Race to be validated, making this category unofficial for the championship. "This first championship was an incredible and challenging experience. "Despite the shifting conditions, I managed to adapt and perform in both Slalom-Race and Freestyle. Even though the Slalom-Race category couldn't be validated, this event marks a promising start for the discipline. I’m excited to see what the future holds in upcoming competitions!"
