PHOTO: DON'T LOSE IT IN FREESTYLE!

When Titouan sends tricks on his Kube, he always keeps in mind an essential point in freestyle: Not letting go of the gear!
In wing foiling, the worst thing that can happen is to fall on the gear or have it fall on you. Just next to enjoying a nice roll in the shorebreak with your gear… So let’s try to avoid these sketchy moments. Fully committing to tricks is the best way to progress and not get hurt.
From your first straight jumps, remember to keep your wing in your hands and your feet in the straps. The biggest mistake at this point would be to let it all go. To let go of everything means to no longer control anything. The risk is to fall on your equipment, to pierce your wing with the stab or to take everything on the nose. So don’t let go of anything to control your way down 😉
On the contrary, when things go wrong sheeting in will often save you from a bad fall instead of letting go. The landing will be memorably violent but generally harmless. It’s counter intuitive, but being pulled by the wing generally keeps you away from the foil.
And the danger is clearly the foil, especially the trailing edges at the rear. So you should NEVER throw the board in front of you, meaning you don’t throw yourself backwards. You always fall in front when sheeting in because it is better to have the board flying over you than the foil stabbing you. A big bruise if you fall in front or stitches if you fall on the back of the foil. The choice is quickly made ! Sheet in.
Serious accidents are very rare but when you are on the wrong side of the statistics it can get ugly. So for a safer practice, do like Titouan, wear a helmet and an impact vest for each session 😉
