“When I see 10 of you on a lake, on a cool trip, in Tahiti on a reef, or in front of my house, all on a HIPE; I tell myself that this idea I had really brings joy to people.

I’ve had been thinking for a long time about this innovation which consists of separating the need of volume (of a board) from the need of stiffness, to treat them as two parts put together. You could actually fly without the inflatable part of our HIPE (in kite foiling for instance).

Before that, the inflatable boards issue was always the same: how to fix a foil under a board and make the whole as rigid as possible? My concept worked great and even revolutionized wing boards. How many of them are inflatable boards now? 70%? Who would have thought it possible to get the same performance out of an inflatable board as with a rigid one? It’s a real game changer.

The GONG system made this evolution possible because to prove that this concept was efficient, we had to heavily invest in molds and in carbon plates. Almost 300$ of pure carbon to add to the price of an inflatable board. Only GONG was able to present an acceptable public price with these costs. And in doing so, we democratized the very idea that inflatable boards are efficient boards.

When I switched GONG to a direct sales model in 2009, I gave a boost to dozens of possibilities. I remember the moment when I had to decide whether to halve the public prices or to stay in line with the mainstream market. You know the rest ?
