Sailing on a “sinker” type board gives absolute priority to responsiveness and sensations in flight.

The inertia of your board is then almost zero so that the slightest of your intentions is immediately converted into action. You have a toy under your feet that allows all angles in the surf and rotations on command in freestyle.

A board is considered a sinker when its volume is less than your weight minus 10. You must master how the waterstart (see our How To). Contrary to what one might think, the waterstart is not much more technical than a classic start provided that:

First, you need some depth because by sinking the board you can easily reach the bottom. Between 1.5m and 2m of water are necessary depending on the volume of the board in relation to your weight. Good to know if you ride in the waves on shallow reefs 😉

Second, you need a board that sinks easily so you can instinctively place it under your feet (like a shortboard you would sink under your feet to get up and see what’s going on on the horizon).

Third, you have to be well-powered. If you lack power you will have difficulty balancing and starting. The physical effort is then quite intense at each start. The waterstart option is therefore reserved for the medium/high range for an intermediate level practitioner. The more experienced ones, however, can hope to maintain a slightly wider range of use. Let’s say that at your weight minus 20 or minus 30, it’s still easy. At minus 40 or minus 50 of your weight it’s very tense 😉
