GEAR: WHICH BOARD TO START WING FOIL?

Several options are available to you if you want to start wing foil

The Lance: the compact version of the Zuma, very stable laterally, ideal for wing.  The Zuma: the easy rigid board in SUP foil and wing, and with good performances. The HIPE: the inflatable with 95% of the performance of a rigid board. Ideal for beginners and much more!  The Mob2Taste: the SUP surf board that also allows the practice of SUP foil and wing.

The Lance

The board is the coolest board to start with. Its width gives it a little more stability than the HIPE and the Zuma. This width also allows for rapid acceleration on the water without affecting your top speed once in flight. Thanks to its compactness, it also benefits from good responsiveness which makes it a really fun board. This very low compactness allows for slightly tighter turns. Its comfortable shape limits the risk of falls on touchdowns, will give you confidence to attempt jibes and turns in flight. In the event of a fall, its stability allows you to start again easily without exhausting yourself when starting. On top of that, its compactness contributes to its comfort on land and in transport.

The Zuma

This board is less compact than the Lance. A longer board increases inertia, asking for a bit more commitment when changing direction. But it also offers an incomparable, very smooth glide. A longer board will also keep its trajectory on the water, be more docile. In the first sessions it is very difficult to control the trajectory and to have enough speed before flying. It is therefore essential to keep length when you are a beginner. This length is particularly crucial to facilitate paddling in SUP. This is one of the big advantages of the Zuma, in addition to being a good board to start in wing, it also allows you to practice SUP foil.

The HIPE

Like the Zuma, the HIPE can be used in wing and SUP foil. The main difference with the Zuma and the Lance naturally lies in its technology, which is a real revolution with multiple advantages:
  • Ease of use, on land but also in the water.
  • Transport of course.
  • Solidity because the inflatable is not sensitive to shocks.
  • Safety if you hit your board.
  • Performances of a rigid board.
The two large sizes of the HIPE, the 6’5 and the 7’5 offer great comfort for beginners. Like the Zuma and the Lance, these two sizes have an “ADS” fin box cleverly placed in front of the front foot to allow you to sail flat on the water without going downwind. The HIPE is smooth and easy, while still being very effective. On the other hand, in the small sizes, it will be necessary to be in good physical condition or to be light. The very small sizes are more suitable for kite foil or surf foil practice.

The Mob2Taste

This one is a board dedicated to SUPers who also wish to practice wing foil and / or SUP foil. Its shape is buoyant and compact for a SUP board which gives it a lot of dynamism and vivacity. This relative compactness for a SUP makes it a board that also allows you to start in wing foiling. However, at equal size it will be less stable than a pure wing board, but since you will be using it in 3 sports, you will know its balance by heart.

In short, if you want to focus on progressing in wing, this is the Lance for you. If you want an easy board with a SUP foil option go on the Zuma. The Mob2Taste will be suitable for SUPers who want to do everything with a board. If you want an efficient board that is totally worries free, neither on the water nor on land, choose the HIPE.
