It's flat around here...
This is the case for Marc’s 12-year-old son, who hesitates between a Fork 5’2 and a 5’6 to help him go next level in waves beyond 1m.
To help him Marc asks the question directly on our forum: Will progress be faster with a board that allows him to take more waves, the 5’6, or a board that allows more performance, the 5’2?
Elements of answer by the shaper of the Fork in person:
“Hello, Indeed the 5’6 is too big for the moment, in a “performance” logic. Excessive volume and especially surface area are problematic on a shortboard but manageable because we stay on very manoeuvrable boards. So we can deceive ourselves with a board one size above the “perf” size. On the other hand, it’s much more complicated on a Fork because its powerful tail and its carrying nose can quickly become bulky if you do not take the right size. So you can take the size larger, but you really have to let the board slide and carve by using a lot (too much) of power in your stances, which is not ideal for having a dynamic and explosive surf. The fine piloting will be much more complex, and it’s what makes the difference, allowing the liberation of the movements and therefore the real moves. But yes, in a few months he will need the 5’6 😉 For the moment it is the 5’2 🙂 Thank you” L’Ours, shaper & boss GONG
