GONG ambassador in southeastern France, Frédéric enjoyed the vivacity of the Ypra Surf-Freestyle in fun conditions on his home spot.

Test of the new Ypra Surf-Freestyle
“I was able to test the new Ypra Surf-Freestyle front wings, especially the L and XL sizes, 800 cm2 and 900 cm2 respectively, with the Freestyle 41 stab and the adapted short fuselage. The wind was moderate, 20/30 knots side-on, waves about 1m/1m50 high, with a Neutra UPE 4.5. I’m an experienced rider, weigh 86 kg and usually use Ypra-S L front wings in 1000 cm2 and the Curve M-H 900. I also use the Curve S-H 700 in bigger conditions and the Curve L-H 1100 when it’s light for me.”
Wind range
“The Ypra Surf-Freestyle XL 900 is truly a 900, there is no over- or under-rating. This is a specialized Ypra, not like the Curve H. Yet I could use it in similar conditions to the Curve M-H 900 or Ypra-S L 1000, but could not expect the same performances. It takes off well when you have a good technique and a “planing” board, like the hull of 2024 GONG boards, and/or overpowered. It’s still a thin front wing, so not a beginner front wing!
The low end is excellent for this size, but you have to be fast and alert on your feet. Mastering jibes and tacks is a plus. Glide and speed are great. It allows you to ride fast, to connect even the slightest bumps and it’s easy to pump in wingfoil.”
Its rail-to-rail
“With its short wingspan (85 cm vs 86 for the Curve H, and 90 for the Ypra-S), this is a great surf front wing. Combined with the short fuselage and Freestyle 41 stab, the front to rear span, allowing ultra-aggressive turns. It matches well with a Stunt, a Lethal, or a Lemon, for example.”
Incredible pop
“Last but not least, this plane with short front to rear span and incidence provided by the Freestyle stab is magical to fly high! You don’t even a need a vertical ramp to set off for the moon. The pop is incredible, and so are the rotations. I landed at first attempt the first three 360s I tried.”
A versatile foil for expert riders
“The foil is really nervous, whether surfing or jumping, ultra reactive, this is a foil for an expert looking for performance. Nota bene: the wind was strong when I switched for the 800, I didn’t see much difference during the session.”
