Looking for more radical performance, Hugo found the perfect front wing to attack in the waves.

Wing foiler: Bastien, GONG team rider, on his Stunt FSP Pro, Neutra Aramid X, HM85 mast, Ypra Surf front wing and Ypra Surf-Freestyle stab.

A sharp and radical front wing

“Here’s some feedback on the Ypra Surf V3 after several weeks of use.
Front wing size: S (620 cm²)
Tester’s weight: 80 kg
Setup: Lethal 4’10, HM 92 mast, Veloce and Fluid stabs.
Tested in all kinds of conditions.

Initially riding the Fluid XXS V3, I switched to this Ypra Surf to get back a sharper and more radical front wing. In the end, I wanted to reconnect with the performance side of the Ypra V2.

What stands out is that you find the DNA of the Ypra V2, amplified, but with the added tolerance typical of the V3.”

Takeoff and stab

“Nothing complicated for takeoff: it lifts much earlier than the V2 at equivalent surface. You immediately feel it’s a very neutral front wing, with rather low lift. That’s a little unsettling at first. You need to move the mast forward significantly to regain front foot support.

A Veloce stab should be avoided, unless oversized — but then it doesn’t make much sense.
The Fluid stab does the job perfectly, with a great balance between glide and radical performance.
The Surf Freestyle stab is probably a step higher in terms of radicality, and should provide more front foot support (I’ll be receiving it in a few days, so I’ll update this feedback).”

Speed and carving

“In a straight line, it flies fast and will overshadow a lot of wings. It needs a fairly powerful stab to guarantee comfortable longitudinal stability, but it’s a real war machine. You can easily hit 27–28 knots in any conditions, as long as you press into it a little.

In the waves, it’s a true shortboard! The slightest pressure turns instantly into a carve. You can commit like never before. It just wants to slice through the water. A push that’s too long or imprecise can spin out into a 360, but you’re never caught off guard: the foil never throws your knees into your teeth. It cuts through the water precisely without ever breaching. Where a Veloce or a Fluid might throw you off if you lose control, the Ypra Surf just keeps gliding — because it simply never fails you! You stop thinking about balance and only think about where to turn or hit next!”

Glide and downwind

“In terms of glide, at this size it’s obviously a notch below the other wings in the range — and rightly so, it’s not its program. It still stays in flight without issue as long as you give it minimal input, whether through swell bumps or waves. To be clear: it does glide, but at this size you’ll need to push it quickly if you miss the swell!

On big, well-shaped downwind swells, it’s pure joy. Its speed allows you to follow any wave train without risk of being ejected. And with good pumping technique, it easily recovers if you fall behind.

Finally, for jumps, its speed and compactness give it serious advantages. Can’t wait to see the extra pop a Surf Freestyle stab might add!
