FEEDBACK: VELOCE XL AND XXL IN WING !!!

The program of the Veloce is to go much faster and stronger than with a classic foil without degrading handling. Our ambassador Yohann gives us a little feedback on this high ratio wing that he uses in XL and XXL sizes in wing.

Veloce XXL

“A different lateral stability”

“I had a few more sessions including 2 in small waves. The more it goes, the more I appreciate it. I got used to its different lateral stability and got used to being gentle with it in the turns. If I want to turn tight I gradually enter the curve and gradually tighten the turn. I avoid sudden pressure changes.

I also learned to recover the small stalls that can be there when you force too much on it (it looks a bit like spin outs that you would recover from immediately in windsurfing, except that it goes vertically).

In surfing there were real small waves. At first I tended to get carried away too far and then I just got used to working on small waves more and it’s just better 🙂

“The Veloce XXL shines in very unstable wind”

I also took a few sessions in very unstable wind with wind holes that could last.

In these kinds of conditions, the Veloce XXL really shines. Its glide allows you to continue through the holes while pumping almost indefinitely. We must match the transitions in relation to the reliefs of the water to make them by leaning on them or by preventing them from slowing us down when we have to jibe while pumping.

Once the flight is acquired, you have to fly with finesse but it gives the impression that you can never go back down until you make a mistake. It’s really exhilarating.”

Veloce XL

“I need less force to accelerate”

I was able to do a flat session (with a portion of the body of water that let in a chop of 40-50 cm filtered wave) with the Veloce XL, stab Veloce 47, Lethal 5’3, Neutra 5 in about 20 knots rather stable. I loved it 🙂 . I think I’m going at least as fast as with the Curve L-T but the feelings are different. I feel the speed less with the Veloce. I need less force to accelerate and I have less to handle the foil when trying to push the speed.

Right now I’m trying to work the frontside tacks:

  • With the Curve L-T, I usually feel the urge to pump with my feet when the board is facing into the wind.
  • With the Veloce XL I felt this need much less, it was more gliding and whatever happens I come out with more speed than with the Curve L-T.

“It retains the speed better”

The speed of the Veloce XL seems to be a bit higher than that of the Curve L-T (used with a smaller stab: the Veloce 43), but I find that it retains the speed better so that compensates.

During the session I did not have a mini dropout as I sometimes have with the XXL. Once or twice in a little steep turns I had the impression of crossing a big bubble (like when you cross the white zone behind a wave that has just broken). With the arrival of the new foil wings I ordered a Fluid XL, I’m starting to have doubts and I’m wondering if I shouldn’t have gone for a Veloce XL, or even a L-T. ”
