FEEDBACK: MATATA FSP 2X 5’3

Feedback from Lalo on our social networks who adopted the Matata FSP 2X 5’3 for his light wind kite sessions.

“After several sessions, I can share a little feedback on this directional board dedicated to lightwind conditions.
- The shape of the Matata adapts the Mini Simmons concept to kitesurfing.
- The construction is a full PVC sandwich, deck and hull, thus ensuring solidity and responsiveness to the board.
- The pads this year are 5mm thick, providing additional comfort and increased preservation of the board.
- Tested with a FCSII Performer M quad set-up, with 15m² and 12m² kites from another brand (replaced this week by a GONG Unik 14m² and a Freewave 12m²).
Conditions of the test: from 10 to 18 knots, from choppy flat water to 80cm waves.
The first thing that strikes you about this board is its ability to reach planing early and keep it going in windholes. The board accelerates very quickly to reach a high cruising speed, with a fairly impressive speed/heading ratio in the light wind.
Big advantage when surfing to be able to head back upwind effortlessly in side-on or sideshore conditions.
In side or side-on conditions the board rides like a Mini Simmons and accelerates hard between sections. Its only limit (but it is not its program) is the hollow waves of the reform.
The entry in the curve is smooth with a good handling of the rail to hit the off the lip, or even a small air given the wide rear of the board.
It is very healthy and does not pearl with some rocker on the nose.
On the flat, a good speed is easy to reach and maintain. In very choppy conditions, the board remains comfortable. I guess it’s thanks to its belly and concave on the hull. Given its shape, I expected it to handle chop very badly.
The jibe is super easy with its width and volume. It can be a very good choice for a beginner who wants to learn how to jibe without sinking right away.
In conclusion,
this board excels in light wind conditions and heading upwind. Its power and its glide under the feet allow you to use big kites to enjoy lightwind sessions without the help of a foil.
