Quite spectacular, the backflip is nevertheless accessible on the condition that you have succeeded in catching a wave, putting on your straps, getting out of the wave, pumping out to sea and picking up speed! 😉 In short, at this point it is mostly a celebration for the successful execution of all those steps! So if a wave rises in front of you, don’t miss out on this little adrenaline rush. Here are our tips.

For starters, it goes without saying that this trick cannot be attempted in the middle of the line-up. If you lose your foil mid-rotation it could badly hurt someone. If in any doubt as to what’s behind the wave, don’t attempt this trick.

Unlike a gymnast doing a backflip on land with zero momentum, a surf foil gives you good speed. This energy is the key to your rotation. So keep pumping until the last moment. Your last pumping stroke should end on the pop that will make you take off. So as you approach the section, adapt the rhythm of your pumping so that this timing is just perfect. You are therefore slightly regrouped at the start of the wave and pushing while extending your rear leg for take-off. At the same time, dynamically tilt your head back. If this head movement is perfectly in line with your board, the backflip will be perfectly vertical. If you tilt your head slightly your rotation will take the same direction. That is, with a slight twist in the rotation. To speed up the rotation, regroup. To slow it down, extend your boy. The steeper the wave, the faster the rotation. Your movement will therefore depend on the wave you have chosen. To find the right balance in your movements, repetition and persistence are key. Unfortunately the key to maintaining flight after this move is no longer just a matter of perseverance, it is metaphysical …;)

Up to you !
