Tricky Conditions at Ponta Preta Launch the Surf-Kite Season
The launch of the 2026 GKA World Tour in Ponta Preta (Cape Verde) did not deliver the powerful and committed show that this legendary spot usually offers. This year, conditions were particularly challenging: very light wind, reduced swell, and inconsistent sets. At times, riders even had to body drag just to stay in position in the line-up.
Despite this, the competition managed to progress through to the semi-finals. However, due to insufficient wind, the finals could not be held, and the women’s event could not even be launched.

Commitment and control in light wind
At GONG, all eyes were naturally on Airton. Last year, in perfect conditions, he secured a spot in the final with the best heat scores, the best wave scores, and the highest average of the competition, a true demonstration of power and flow at his home spot of Ponta Preta.
In 2026, he starts as he finished the previous year: strong. He posts the best wave of round 1 and the best overall total across the first three rounds with a 15.77. In technical, underpowered conditions, he showcased his excellent positioning and precise wave reading. Proof that even in light wind, his commitment and accuracy remain reliable assets.
In the quarter-finals, he faced Matchu Lopes in an explosive duel between two former world champions and local riders. In a committed heat despite the lack of wind, both riders gave everything. Matchu found the best opportunities at key moments, bringing Airton’s run to an end just short of the semi-finals.

A competition shaped by the elements
On the final day, a light breeze allowed the semi-finals to be run, but daylight faded before the finals could take place. The competition therefore concluded at that stage, with shared rankings.
This edition of Ponta Preta will be remembered as one of the most difficult to complete, far from the solid and powerful conditions that usually define the spot.
Next stop: Sylt for the second event of the Wave Tour.
