The 2025 kite-surf and wing foil seasons kick off this Thursday, March 13, on the iconic wave of Ponta Preta!
Follow our team riders live thanks to the webcast provided by the GKA and GWA for the Cape Verdean event that kicks off the season. A must-watch for wave riding enthusiasts and suspenseful heats! Especially if you're following wing foil, as this will unfortunately be the only Wave event this year. With Morocco and Brazil missing from the 2025 calendar, it all comes down to Ponta Preta’s unforgiving break, where bold moves are met with a brutal trip over the rocks. Tension will be high from the very first heats, especially with the application of new rules (explained below) that could seriously shake up the rankings.
The kite-surf Wave tour will play out over four events. After Cape Verde, riders will head to Sylt (Germany), Dakhla (Morocco), and Ceara (Brazil). Defending his home spot title from last year, Airton will be gunning for a repeat victory. With a stacked lineup featuring the biggest names in strapless kite-surfing, expect high-intensity heats right from the opening rounds.

A major rule change in wing foiling
Surfing with or without the wing? The long-standing debate from the first Wave Tour stop two years ago is settled. Riders can now harness the wing’s power to boost airs and tricks over the lip, bringing windsurf-style aerials into the mix.
In the first two seasons, high scores went to riders who surfed on the foil, fully committed, and sent airs without hanging onto the wing. This approach put the spotlight on surf-style riding and free-flying—often seen as the holy grail of wing foil sensations. The format was essentially a surf foilong contest, with the wing serving only to get riders back upwind. This created a split between surf purists and those who wanted to push the full potential of wing foiling. The new rule now removes any gray areas for riders and clears up confusion for spectators about what’s actually allowed with the wing.
Judges have made it clear: pure, committed, and fluid free-fly surfing will still be the main scoring factor for each wave. But airs, tricks, and radical wing-assisted cutbacks will now earn serious bonus points. To stand out, riders will have to squeeze every bit of potential out of the wave. We can't wait to see just how far they'll push the limits!
Love it or hate it, this rule change is set to deliver an epic showdown. If the conditions match last year’s perfect setup for Malo’s win, the webcast could hit record-breaking numbers.
Best of luck to all the riders!
