NEWS: WORLD HEALTH DAY!

On the occasion of World Health Day, let’s cover the benefits of surfing on your health!
April 7 is an anniversary date for the World Health Organization (WHO), which celebrates its 75th anniversary this year. On this day, the WHO, like many actors of the health sector, communicates on access to care, the latest discoveries in medical research and prevention. As part of prevention, most know the benefits on physical condition and more broadly on long-term health of a regular practice of sport. The practice of surfing or SUPing comes with specific benefits that are worth remembering.

- Cardiovascular health: The effort to position yourself in a line-up with current and strong waves is comparable to that of a jogger. The effort can be either continuous on a spot with a lot of current in order to stay in place and split up while waiting for the series. In both cases, your breathing is considerably improved and the explosiveness required at the take-off is the witness of your good physical condition.
- Improved muscle strength: Whether you’re paddling, lying on a board or standing on a SUP, it requires strong muscle resistance to get past the waves. The muscles of the arms, shoulders and back are heavily used during a session, which helps to strengthen and tone the body as a whole.
- Increased flexibility: A surf session involves a large amount of dynamic movement and wide amplitude. Repeating the movements gradually makes you feel more mobile.
- More core muscles and strengthening of proprioceptive muscles: To keep the board flat and balanced when paddling, your abdominal belt and your back work a lot. Without it, your paddle effort will lose considerably in efficiency as the board won’t glide smoothly on the water. Each movement of the board on the chop is adjusted the core muscle of the surfer or SUPer. On your feet and on the wave, the many proprioceptive muscles work to ensure your balance.
- Burn Calories: Paddling is an intense physical activity that can help burn calories and maintain a healthy weight. Depending on the intensity of the activity and the length of the session, surfers can burn up to 400 calories per hour.
- Stress reduction: Surfing can also benefit mental health. Exposure to a natural environment can reduce stress and improve mood. Focusing on surfing practice can also help free the mind from daily worries, providing a moment of relaxation.
