L’Ours answers a question on the Forum about the size of the waves to practice SurfFoil : “Hello, A good clue as to whether the waves are too big to start SurFoiling : – if the Foil bottoms out when you take off : the waves are too small. – if you have ten centimeters of bottom under the Foil when you take off, the waves are the perfect size. – if you have water in your ears in the take off area : it’s too big. We all agree that we’ll learn to SurFoil on a sandy beach with a gentle slope and far away from the others. In this context, knowing that a wave breaks on 0.7 times its height (a wave of 1m breaks on 70cm of bottom or less) you can see that with a 65cm Mast even if you row in the middle of the wave at take off, it will be 50/80cm of face. Here we’re not talking about Hawaiian measurements or anything else. We’re talking about a simple double decimeter front measurement. All this to say that between a wave that can be taken because in enough water to pass the Foil and a wave too big; the delta is minimal. We pass very quickly from too small to too big in SurfFoil. The Pros will cheat by putting the Foil on the bottom, they wait for the wave to lift them up to row two strokes and they drop in with less water than they need. But the Foil hates this method because it scratches the Front Wings and weakens the structure. (we do it all the time anyway ;)). Thank you.” Advisor: Patrice Guénolé and GONG-GALAXY.
