Sometime, you don’t have choice: you have to take off late!
It occure often when you learn SUP. No enough paddling power so you are too close to the beach. Problems to manage the peak. Bigger wave set.
Manage late take off is insuring you to take the best waves, to avoid big wipe outs and to make your friends confidents at the peak.
For a classic take off, you increase your paddle power at each stroke. This is the key to be right in time in the wave.
For a late take off, the lip is really aggressive and you have to go with it. The key is to be in the take off in a surf attitude as soon as possible.
But, you also have to manage your speed. If you don’t want to fall, you have to solve the problem on the late take off which is that you go from 0 to 100 in an instant. The key is to paddle one or two strokes really powerfull to have a maximum speed without going too close to the beach and being more late again.
The first stroke has to be the most powerfull of your life! Then adopt a surf attitude and manage the drop. Keep always a forward attitude, engaged.
