HOW TO : choose your board part 3 !!!

How to choose your board? – The Outline :
The exterior curve of the Board brings together the length and width elements but, the way in which the Shaper joins these ‘4 corners’ of the Board together will condition it. We often use the calibrations OFO (One Foot Off), which measures the width at 30cm from the front and the back. This gives us a good gauge of the curvature of the outline. But on a SUP, the Paddle allows us to put some angle on the Board. Which means the curves can be placed practically on the edge. The back third of the outline is often used for rocker. In consequence, a strong difference the medium point (the max width) and the back OFO, and also the tail, can give you a very agile Board in the turns. She will seriously turn tight. Flip the coin over : she will be difficult to control. A back third that’s ‘straight’, ‘squared’ will be less agile when turning but have more power.
In fact, the larger the tail is in comparison to the medium point, the faster it will plane and accelerate hard. They’re considered Boards that are powerful with a lot of back foot.
Similarly, a pinched nose will be more agile because it has less length of the rail in the water when in the turn. On the other hand it will not work as well for noserider, but we be faster to row…
Take note that the outline conditions the row effect a lot. A squared Board very little, and a round Board turns on a dime. Advisor : Patrice Guénolé et GONG Surfboards. Source : GONG SUP Staff, we share that we know.
