HOW TO : choose your board part 2 !!!

How to choose your board? – The Width :
The width manages stability, the lift and also the agility.
You should really go with surface and volume in order to stay on top of it; The paddle makes the width very visible because when surfing, you will be leaning on that paddle when turning and you will have some pretty extreme angles between the Board and water. A big part of this width is out of the water. But this width brings serious comfort. Better to have too much than to little.
A SUP Board that’s 27” would be considered ‘narrow’, whereas a 30” ‘normal’, and a 33” ‘large’. These are good bases. There are a myriad of variations that we can do with function to the riders needs.
In fact, a narrow Board is going to go faster, the is flagrant when paddling and when it’s short even more so. But when surfing it’s not as easy as it looks. In very fast waves a narrow Board is indispensable, but in mushy or smaller waves, volume brings lift, hence acceleration. The prejudice that width inhibits speed is unfounded in 94% of sessions. The concept is the same when considering the rapport between width and agility. More often times than not a wider Board is more agile than the ‘gun’ style Board. The width will offer you an off-center standpoint that can augment your manoeuvrability if you are capable of mastering it. Advisor : Patrice Guénolé et GONG Surfboards.
