How to nail a handle pass jibe in lowkite?

Pull off a little sleight of hand with this highly original jibe: deliberately put your lowkite down on the water, carve around it, then grab the bar behind your back and relaunch the kite as if nothing happened. Guaranteed style points, and especially effective in light wind!

Here’s how to do it:

  1. Initiate your handle pass jibe like a regular jibe: keep enough speed and anticipate your line with your eyes.

  2. At the beginning of the turn, once you have already borne away, release your front hand and point the bar downward with your back hand, directing the leading edge towards the water.

  3. The kite can come fully into contact with the water, that’s no problem. Let it slide momentarily across the surface on the inside of your turn. Think of your lowkite as a pivot point that you are going to carve around.

  4. Use your speed to cross the wind axis, then perform the handle pass just after you have gone past the lowkite, while it is still dragging behind you. Pass the back hand that is steering the kite behind your back, then grab the bar with the other hand, making sure you catch it towards the front so you can depower.

  5. As you exit the maneuver, if your line is right, the lowkite will open up and pop back into shape automatically. Magic!!!
