GEAR: WHAT SIZE DIFFERENCE SHOULD THERE BE BETWEEN FRONT WINGS IN A SURF FOIL QUIVER?

Build a coherent and optimized quiver of front wings for surf foiling.

The ideal foil quiver will be obviously dependent on your personal preferences, conditions of home spot and experience. This makes for countless options but there’s a few rules that are gonna be valid points to consider no matter where you come from.

Let’s see those through a question from a GONG user on our GONG Galaxy group. A typical example of somebody of good level wanting to upgrade to V3 foils (rider of 78 kg).

Question:

Just got my Fluid H V3 in size L. I am a prone foiler looking to have a 2 foil quiver...

The size L will be for small days and I am unsure if I should buy a Fluid V3 M or S for good days.

My old quiver was Fluid H size L and M and that worked just fine. They had a 200cm2 difference in size.

On the Fluid V3, the increments are only 100cm2 between so it seems likely that I could have a L and S as quiver, but would like to know what you guys think?

General recommendation: Close sizes for precision, big jumps in size for different programs

  1. If you’re building a quiver for prone foiling only:

  • In prone foiling, maintaining a consistent feeling across your quiver is key. You want the same predictable and familiar response, whether you’re on smaller or bigger days.
  • To achieve this, the sizes in your quiver should be close. Skipping a size (like going from L to S) introduces a completely different sensation that might disrupt your riding precision and flow.
  • For prone foiling, I recommend the Fluid H V3 M alongside your L. The M provides slightly less lift, improved speed, and enhanced maneuverability, while staying consistent with the feel of the Fluid line. The 100 cm² difference between sizes in the V3 lineup ensures subtle yet meaningful adjustments to your performance without compromising your muscle memory.

  1. If You Want a Multi-Program Quiver:

  • If your goal is to diversify your riding program (e.g., pairing prone foiling with downwinding, wingfoiling, or ultra-light winds), then jumping sizes makes sense.
  • For example, if your L is perfect for small waves and daily prone sessions, you could add the Fluid H V3 S for a completely different purpose, such as big days, higher speeds, or carving sharper turns in more technical waves. In this case, the contrast between L and S would serve to expand your range rather than refine it.

Specific Recommendations for an upgrade from V2 to V3 foils:

If your already have a quiver of Fluid H V2 L and M that worked well, we strongly recommend staying with a similar setup:

  • The Fluid H V3 M will give you a seamless transition from the L for good days, with slightly less lift and a more dynamic feel, perfect for sharper turns and higher speeds.
  • The Fluid H V3 S, while tempting, could feel too different for a two-foil quiver dedicated solely to prone foiling. The jump from L to S would create a significant change in behavior, sacrificing the consistency and precision you’ve enjoyed with your previous quiver.

Summary

- If you’re aiming for prone foiling performance and want to refine your riding across a range of wave sizes, go for the closest size. It keeps your setup balanced and predictable.

- If you want to expand your program and tackle significantly different conditions or styles, such as big days or tow-in, then consider the jump a size or two.

For prone foiling, precision is everything—having close sizes ensures you maintain the feel and control you love. For multi-program versatility, larger size jumps are the way to go.
