Find the dimensions you need to make your wing foil learning journey easy and enjoyable.

Opting for extra comfort is rarely a mistake, particularly for beginners. Wing foiling is accessible to everyone when practiced in favorable conditions, on an appropriate spot, and with gear that makes learning easier. This article focuses on selecting the right board, with an emphasis on the dimensions that will help you take off quickly. We’ll examine the volume, length, compactness, and review the options offered in our range.

Two factors influence the ease of use and performance of a board more than any other, especially for beginners in wing foil. These are the volume and length of the board. Here’s a detailed analysis, which for simplicity’s sake is limited to our range of rigid boards (as the required volumes differ for inflatable boards):

  1. Volume: A key factor for beginners

A volume of +30 to +50 liters is recommended to ensure stability and buoyancy.

  • +30 liters (so 110 L for someone weighing 80kg): The minimum to get started, but it will require more technique and be slightly less forgiving.
  • +40 to +50 liters (so 120 to 130 L for someone weighing 80kg): Provides more comfort and greatly eases learning, especially in transitions and balance phases.

  1. Dimensions and shape: Length vs compactness

A board's performance is also affected by its shape.

Zuma (long and large board):

Despite its width, the Zuma takes advantage of its length to deliver optimal glide before take off.

  • This length facilitates acceleration and reduces the effort required to take off, especially in light wind conditions (10-15 knots).
  • It is a board that excels in light wind due to its ability to lift off easily. It remains stable, though slightly less responsive than a shorter model once in flight.

The recommended option if you frequently ride in light winds (10-15 knots). Its length provides smooth glide and makes takeoff easier. Ideal for maximizing light wind sessions and progressing quickly with minimal effort.

Lance (compact and large board):

It retains a width similar to the Zuma, but its compactness changes its behavior. The Lance offers excellent balance at a standstill or during acceleration before takeoff, which is ideal in windier conditions (15-20+ knots) or in choppy seas.

However, its compactness reduces its glide before takeoff: additional effort in pumping or a powerful wing will be needed to compensate.

This is the ideal choice for moderate to strong winds (15-20+ knots) or choppy water conditions. Its compactness provides excellent stability at rest, but you'll need more technique to take off in lighter winds.

  1. General advice: prioritize the right volume first, then choose the length based on your goal.

Whatever your choice, stay within a range of at least 110 to 130 liters (for an 80kg rider) to start comfortably. Easy success comes first. This will allow you to progress quickly while ensuring performance suited to your conditions.
