FEEDBACK: FREESTYLE 39 STAB
Though he was skeptical before his purchase, Lorenzo still can’t believe the boost in sensations and performance he got out of his new Freestyle 39 stab in kite foiling.
Amazing lift
“I rarely have been so excited at a product. The Freestyle has re-ignited my pleasure for kitefoiling. I was super skeptical, and tried it against my better judgment (“It is too big, it will not be fun, it will be slow…”).
First impression: amazing lift during takeoff. I was up in an instant. Underpowered? No issue, it helped me like a hand pushing me from below.
Second impression: this thing is stable… why? I hit 21.2 knots right during the first run. One of my highest speeds ever. It is so reassuring that you go faster.
Third impression: love this thing!!! Push a bit on the back and up it comes! I love how you can change pitch just “thinking” of it. The Fluid-38 is super pitch-locked in comparison. To get pitch freedom I used the smallest Veloce, and that led to so many other problems…
Fourth impression: it is lively, fun! Not ultra free, but turns tight, makes you want to push harder!
Fifth impression: glide is still there. Nothing like the old non-pro stabs. During toeside tacks I could almost do a full circle without power.”
The best stab I have ever tried
“Conclusion: it is the best stab I have ever tried from GONG (and I bought Fast 40/45, Surf 40/45, Veloce 36H/39/43, Fluid 38H/40). It suits my riding perfectly.
Should I nitpick? Front foot pressure gets really serious on a Fluid L-S at speed. With my 110Kg I was leaning full front at 20 knots, else the foil would have jumped out of the water. But the growth in front foot pressure is gradual, and constant, so ok.
I’ll order the 37, just to get a feel of how fun it can be with 3cm less of fuselage. But I reckon this 39 is a true masterpiece, because it is paradoxical: it is free and yet stable, playful and yet reassuring, great for underpowered conditions and yet will go with you at great speed.

“PS: It also made me hit 90% on my strapless footswitch-tacks. It felt like cheating! I tack, then push on the back, the foil comes up, I switch feel, loop the kite and off I go in the new direction. Supreme!!! :D”
