Many of you on our Forum are wondering if keeping your Wing up while navigating is not too physical for your arms.
One of the key elements of the Wing is its traction whose angle is close to a Kite. But there is no need to ‘carry’ the Wing, it is the Wing that relieves your arms. The traction is at the same angles as the Kite, providing comparable sensations. At the bottom it pulls hard, and at the top it makes you lighter.
We notice that for many beginners, especially those who are riding a Foil for the first time, what requires the most effort and energy when discovering this discipline, is the management of the balance on the Foil. And once this parameter is mastered, they quickly find themselves enjoying themselves and sailing for hours on end without a Harness.
Diane, office manager at GONG, navigating without a Harness with her Pulse.
Because if riding without a Harness is undoubtedly sexier and because you feel freer, you have to ride with little bit of canvas so as not to get your arms ripped off. Secondly, each Wing in our range is different and allows us to adapt to the requirements of each person. Depending on the shape, some Wings will require you to ride almost systematically with a Harness, while others, like our Wing Plus, whose shape has been studied for, develops a little less power and a lot of tolerance in high range so as not to get overwhelmed. It’s the Harness that absorbs the gusts, and not your arms!
To sum it up :
The Wing Plus is the softest, and therefore the easiest without a Harness.
The Wing Pulse is the most nervous, and therefore not the easiest without a Harness.
The Wing Superpower is the most powerful, and therefore not the easiest without a Harness.
On the other hand, if you like to ride with a bigger Wing, the use of a Harness is almost mandatory if you don’t want to do sessions with a Harness at one o’clock. In this case, the installation of Harness lines is super simple, (see our tutorials on the Forum). We advise you to use a Harness that is as soft and as tight as possible, with a Windsurfing type hook. Tips from 24 to 28cm.
Then it’s up to you to see if the feeling prevails over the performance.
