FORUM : USE OF A HARNESS WITH THE WING !!!

L’Ours feedback about a question concerning the use of a Harness with the Wing:
“Between your two hands there are three handles. You have to put some cord on the handle following your front hand and one after. The third one remains free.
I recommend a short piece.
Personally, I have been flying the harness for several months.
First of all, because I’m also a Windsurfer.
And then to be able to sail for hours and hours and start again the next day (it’s my job).
I never use a windsurfing harness line because I get injured in transfers. The Windsurfing loop is heavy and when it hits your eye you remember it!!!!!
I use a simple loop, preferably quite rigid. I attach it with a self-tightening chair knot on the handle on each side. Minimalist and perfect.
I don’t put a girdle on my harness tip because :
1/ she’ll make it heavier and hurt my eyes again.
2/ I can jibe endlessly without ever detaching myself from the harness, or even with one hand.
I would like to point out that the use of the harness loop on a low-powered Wing is counterproductive. The Wing will choke and you will go much slower than by hand.
However, I have been working on ultra stiff and powerful Wings for several months now, which require a harness piece.
With these overpowering Wings, I did “race racing” sessions in 6m2 in 30/35kt. It’s just insane. The upwind setting is perfect, no more parasitic movement. The surge and pull is so enjoyable. And the speeds are finally respectable. In this context, a harness is essential.
On the other hand, I also use the harness in surf sessions in which it is used for nothing more than to hang my leash on it with a simple carabiner. With this system, I NEVER get the leash in my feet. That’s great. That’s great.
Note that I hated using my Kite Harness. Very rigid (shell), very thick (padded for shocks), it was against the direction of freedom of movement that I like in the Wing.
On the other hand, I use the DaKine Chameleon harness ( https://www.gong-galaxy.com/categorie-p … arnais-fr/) which is ultra flexible. I removed the shorts and all the reinforcements. I barely use it, so I don’t feel it. Honestly, it’s great. I have the comfort of navigating without a harness and the benefit of a harness at my disposal.
Finally, expect to take some severe falls. Going over the handle bars with a Wing hurts a lot because the Wing is an inflatable structure, so on impact it stops on the water… You can hit your head on it and twist your neck if you’re not careful… Roll: Cry: Cry: Roll: Roll:
I don’t think I’ll ever Wing without a harness again.
To finish, enjoyment within the enjoyable, you can make a beautiful ascent to the wind by making a series of kite type transfers in the air. You come across a set of swells and jump on it like a madman, linking the turns one after another, charging bumps on every incoming set. Honestly, it’s crazy. I did this in rain with the rainbow in the lagoon at sunset, alone… one of my most beautiful memories of sliding.
On the other hand, Beryl, Malo, Diane, Mélissa and Marine do not use harnesses. They prefer to remain free. There’s something for everybody 😉
It’s up to you.
