FEEDBACK: V3 VELOCE XL AND 92HM MAST
Transition from the V2 Veloce to its latest version for Warrick.
Wing foilers: Malo, Clément and Bastien, GONG team riders, in freefly mode.
A switch from V2 to V3
“Yesterday was my first session in v3 foils. The photograph tells the story – only darkness stopped me from continuing to ride this incredible new foil.
I’m 100kg, and riding a Mint 5’8 with HM92 mast with 1½ degree shim and Veloce v3 XL in foil and stab
What a difference… previously I was riding mostly in Veloce v2, between 900 and 1300cm. They are great foils, but this v3 Veloce is really another level.”
Take-off, acceleration and glide
“Firstly, in launch – in the first moments, when the foil engages, the front foot pressure is huge – it really launches the board out of the water. At first it took me by surprise, but then I understood that it can really support pumping to launch, and then the launches are so easy and as soon as the foil begins to glide, everything balances and locks in.
And then the riding. Everything faster, with less effort and more natural feeling of flight – it’s beautiful to feel it! And from the moment it launches, I have this feeling of acceleration as if sliding down a wave. So cool. The average speed is way higher, even with this large XL foil.
I felt a little unstable at first, until I recognised that I was trying to ride it too slowly – it wants to run! As soon as I understood this, a whole new experience arrived and the feeling gave such confidence. In pitch, everything as you would want it, supercool, everything smooth, responsive but chill – and the big surprise – rail to rail with a 108cm span wing – so responsive. Really fun – you can kick it around! Tips out, no problem – you can cruise with the tip out permanently – it’s superfun just to watch it cutting the water’s surface, in and out of the chop.”
And everything is easier – I could already get much more aggressive with my gybes than my skill level would allow me on the v2 foils – I was getting this beautiful feeling of fast toeside gybes with an aggressive powered exit – and just locked in all the way round. So cool.”
High modulus carbon mast
A short word on the mast – HM92 v3 with my 100kg and a 108cm foil. Locked. Perfect feedback!
I actually moved my mast back a little in the track by 2 marks to find a new balance with the v3 that I liked.
Next time out, it’s the Ypra Slalom in L, and that I’m mega excited for!
The descriptions from GONG about how radically better the v3 is are 100% true. And anyway, the v2 were also great!”
