FEEDBACK: SUPERPOWER 9M

Feedback from Michael who completed his quiver with a Superpower 9m after a first experience on the Superpower 7.5m.

Wing foiler : Malo, team rider GONG, with the Superpower 6m.

“4183g fresh out of the box. A completely different wing compared to 2020&21. Much more tension in the cloth – also at the trailing edge.

Today I took it out on the lake in 10-15 knots according to Windfinder. I wanted to see how it would do in more wind.

First impression

It’s not that much bigger than the 7.5. The handling is surprisingly easy. Where I usually have to pump three times with 7.5, the 9 pulled me on the foil just like that. Very relaxed.

A few times the wind was almost completely gone and I had to pump board and wing to stay up. No problem – with my 1,87 I always had 30-40cm air to the water. The wingspan is amazingly small.

Active pumping is also well possible as with the 7.5. In the gusts (16knts) the wing is very quiet and remains controllable at all times. I almost have the feeling that my 7.5 flutters more?

Tacks and jibes no problem…

If you jibe too wide and the apparent wind doesn’t carry the wing anymore on the downwind course, you have to actively hold it up and turn it. We probably all know this phenomenon with other Wings. But here the 4 kilos are noticeable. Disadvantage…

When sailing upwind for a longer period of time, I found the handles to be too far forward. My back arm started to cramp and I was starting to worry that I wouldn’t make it home. At that point I considered selling the wing again, or having a sailmaker sew me a third handle further back. But then I remembered that the V2 have a second attachment point for the harness further back. That was the Game Changer! It made the wing perfectly balanced. I could actually let go of both hands and fully hang into the harness like I was windsurfing.

It felt like a car with a lot of horsepower!

However:

without a harness I would not like to sail it longer upwind at 13 knots. But that’s not what it was made for. I just wanted to see if it is controllable in the upper range of up to 15 knots, and if it might make my 7.5 superfluous.

Conclusion today

I am very positively surprised – it will be tight for the 7.5. And: no fear of big wings. Now I am going to find out the lower wind limit. Report follows.”
