A review of several surf foil setups using the Curve, Fluid, and Veloce V3, as well as Llyr’s first experience with the Scura.
Surf Foiler: Béryl, GONG staff, riding the Scura FSP Pro with HM77 mast and Curve front wing.
Speed and responsiveness with the Fluid
“Here’s a quick feedback from the session I was lucky to share with Jean-Baptiste Vigouroux this morning. Conditions were small — around 50cm — pretty messy/choppy with an annoying onshore wind.
Rider (me): 39 years old, 178cm / 72kg, athletic. I usually surf with a 4'4 **** board, 35L, heavy and not great (I plan to change it soon), a 79cm HM V2 mast, a Curve V3 L front wing, and a Curve M V3 stabilizer. It works — I manage to link an average of 3 to 4 waves in a row — but it’s far from perfect, and I can feel it when I switch boards with the same setup or test other gear.
Today, I tested 3 different wings and 2 stabilizers. The Fluid V3 FG XXL first, then the XL. Completely different from the V2 — I couldn’t pump at all with the V2, but this time with the XXL I connected on the first wave easily, though I wasn’t comfortable with it; too tiring to ride for me. So after 20 to 30 minutes, I switched to the XL — much easier to pump, lighter underfoot, faster too. More demanding to pump than the Curve, allows fewer mistakes but it’s faster and more dynamic in every aspect.”
Comparison with the Curve and Veloce on the Scura
“After about an hour, I grabbed my Curve and mounted a Veloce XL stabilizer on it. Interesting — it lifted a bit more than the Curve setup. It seems to lock the turns, but for my style, it wasn’t a problem. I liked the bounce sensation it gave.
Then JB lent me his new setup for a few waves — he had just switched from Fluid to Veloce XL, with a Fluid XS stab, on a Scura 4'4.
Pure joy. The Scura — even though this size is way too small for me — is an amazing board (I love it). No issue getting up on the first takeoff, even on small whitewater. It’s tiny underfoot and behaves almost like my dockstart board. The Veloce is incredible — it climbs back upwind easily with lots of speed, relatively easy to maintain (easier than the Fluid), and the turn to relaunch was smooth. Speed on the wave was far superior to the Curve.
I loved this setup. It totally aligns with what I’m looking for: glide, glide, glide, and chaining waves together. The Scura completely disappears when you’re pumping — really solid board — though I’ll need a bigger one.
Huge thanks to JB for all the great tips.”
