FEEDBACK: PULSE DP UPE ARAMID

Feedback about the “unstoppable” accelerations of the Pulse DP UPE Aramid by Valentin who had the opportunity to test our new double-profile Race wing.

Wing foiler: Patrice Guénolé, Boss & Shaper GONG, with the Pulse DP UPE Aramid.

Set-up and conditions

“For my 111th session of 2023 I had the chance to test the new Pulse DP UPE Aramid in 4,5m2 🥰. Before you go further, note that I’ve only used it once, so I haven’t completely mastered it yet. I probably only discovered a small part of its potential.

Known as the Pulse Double Profile UPE, for me its name would be more appropriate if it was Pulse “Delivery Power “UnstoPpablE” or a direct current defibrillator, the more you charge it the more useful power you have, it’s crazy 🤩. Harness line required!!! Helmet and impact vest recommended!!!

I was able to test it in 10~12 knots average in rather flat conditions (I’m used to inland waters so I’m not used to going very fast while having to cope with more than 8cm swells 🤣😅)

To test it I associated it with:

  • Lethal 4’5 (with a Cruzader it must be killer!)
  • HM92 mast
  • Ypra M
  • Veloce H 36
  • Fuselage extension
  • I set the foil fully back (I had 5mm rail left on the boxes).

Rider 47kg, 45kg on the water as I left my brain on the beach 😁”

First launch

“My first impression on the beach:

  • Widened one pump connection😍 , therefore inflation of the 2 bladders at the same time;
  • Those colors 😍😍, for those who wing foil on lakes be careful with white and mud 😉, I am an expert on this problem;
  • The double skin requires a little gymnastics with the pump hose.

Launching:

The water was flat, now I always use the same technique to get into the water whether there’s a shore break or just flat water. To be sure not to damage the gear. I held it with one hand by the boom and the wing did not shake. Impressive stability😜”

First take off

“I was told to take a small foil but I couldn’t see myself taking off with my Ypra XS so I took my Ypra M. I forgot about my fuselage extension so I hit the sand with my stab when entering the water 😅 , ok I went a little further… . I stood up and took off with the first gust, the low range for takeoff reminds me of the Pulse Boom🤣. During the first second of flight the Pulse Boom has a small power hole, the Pulse UPE keeps its power . So takeoff is simplified! “

Acceleration and speed

“Once in flight, it’s another world! As I was lent the wing I didn’t want to return it with a hole so I didn’t go for absolute top speed but high speed runs.

The acceleration is not revolutionary even if it accelerates strongly, on the other hand where I was the most surprised, it is once on your line, it start to accelerate and doesn’t seem to stop . The weak point in my gear today was the thing between the board and the boom . At high speeds it becomes powerful in the hand, but it remains totally acceptable, it’s not at all the same as being overpowered .

In the harness the stability of the wing is just perfect, it doesn’t move a millimeter so you just have to remember to pull on it and keep your foil underwater.😅”

Manoeuvers

“With my personal wings (Neutra and Pulse), I get scared in the jibes when I go full speed. With the Pulse DP the jibes pass more easily with a better speed, no need to slow down before the jibe, we just have to make the brain understand that it stayed on the beach and that we can charge .

In the tacks (at sea it’s not yet my specialty, nor in the river🤫), I find that they pass more easily on short tacks, on long curves it’s similar to the Neutra UPE.

When freeflying, I prefer my Neutra UPE, it slips off my mind more easily. At the same time it’s not the program of the Pulse🙄 .

Flyng upwind is magical, compared to my other wings we lose very little speed when going upwind.

Before testing it, I was afraid of one thing, that the double skin would fill with water when falling, I fell 2~3 times and I never had a problem, so I think that it was just an unfounded fear😅.”

Wind range

“Last point in navigation, which is important for everyone who wants to buy it, coping with the gusts was no problem nor was it during the lulls… So if like me you love long speed runs, you can find yourself flying at incredible speed in no wind (5~6 knots for me), it was when I wanted to freefly with the swell that I understood that there was no wind 😅. So be careful if the wind drops you won’t notice it and if you are offshore, don’t screw up your maneuver at the risk of having a long swim back 😜.”

Conclusion

“Arriving at the beach I usually jump at the last moment with the wing above my head, that way there is no need to dry it and again it showed exemplary stability. No tips touched the water.

It is simple and quick to fold. An advantage of the UPE which you can fold with exemplary simplicity. In the end, I would recommend it for:

  • Anyone who wants to score ;
  • All those who want to check that they can disconnect their brains 😜;
  • All the windsurfers who say that you can’t go fast on a wing ;
  • All the people who don’t wear their glasses while sailing and who love to cruise around, here you are going to cruise around super fast (you can’t see the landscape anyway, so you might as well go quickly).

I strongly advise against it for all beginners who have not completely mastered their flights, you cannot learn to drive with a dragster 😜”
