Feedback from Sébastien who had the opportunity to test the gear of a GONG ambassador equipped with a Neutra RH, HIPE Pro 5’1 and a Ypra L-S / Fluid H 42 set-up.
Wing foiler: Malo, GONG team rider, with a Neutra RH, HIPE Pro and Ypra S.
“Randomly on a trip to Lanzarote, Canary Islands, I met Frédéric Huet, a GONG ambassador, on Las Cucharas beach. We talked for a bit and he offered me to try his gear. The wind was around 20-25 knots. I usually sail with a Lemon 95l, HM mast, Fluid T and Fluid 42 stab. I have Neutra V2 wings.
Originally a windsurfer, I have an intermediate level in winging with jibes that are close to 100%, some surfs / downwinds. My weight, 80kg for 1m80 and rather fit. I usually sail on wave spots in Marseille and its surroundings. I’m very satisfied with my equipment except that I feel like I’m not super fast (I come from slalom in windsurfing) and that I suffer from drag. Moreover, before the test, I wondered if the stab Pro H would unleash my front wing. However, for my level, the set-up I have works very well even in swells for downwinders. The Neutra V2 may also have lost its stiffness over time.
Fred made me try the HIPE Pro in 5’1, HM mast with Ypra LS, Fluid H 42 stab and the new Neutra RH in 4.5. I had never tried H models.
Here’s my hot feedback:
First of all the HIPE Pro 5’1:
Well it does the job and quite well. Super convenient for travel. Everything fits in a bag. So it’s not as rigid as a Lemon but it’s very responsive underfoot, it takes off easily. When stopped, it behaves very well. More stable than the Lemon of the same volume. Less roll. In flight, the board feels like a rigid board of this size and it’s quite comfortable.
The touchdowns are less easy to manage than with my Lemon though.
The Ypra LS, titanium fuselage and Fluid H 42 stabilizer set-up :
Wow! It flies. It glides on its own. It’s easy once flying though I felt it isn’t as stable as my usual set-up. It goes fast. No drag and the turns link up well.
I had some difficulty pumping downwind. I lost flight because I didn’t pump too well. To improve on my behalf. And to make it take off you really have to bear off and off you go.
I had a lot of front foot pressure when I attempted speed runs. Well, I hadn’t changed Fred’s settings. Maybe my setting is a little further back, given our differences in size.
One last thing: it heads upwind very well and very easily.
Finally the Neutra RH:
This was the biggest difference with my personal equipment (Neutra V2). The handles are crazy. It’s awesome. The handles are pleasant to the touch and very wide to facilitate the different hand positions.
Pumping is facilitated by the stiffness of the wing and the handles. We hold the wing well in hand and only 2 handles on the central strut. I love it. The hands go where they want. It’s super easy and convenient.
In downwinders I didn’t feel any extra weight from the wing.
When going for it, the wing holds well. We really feel it’s powerful. It doesn’t move.
This is my amateur feeling. Thanks to Frédéric Huet, a pleasure to try his equipment and thanks to the GONG team for all these beautiful things and all the advice!
Well, after the test I’m considering changing all my gear!”
