FEEDBACK: FLUID

First wing foil session with the Fluid M for GONG ambassador Tytouan, who shares his impressions on the irresistible maneuvrability of this moderate aspect ratio.

Conditions of the session
“90kg rider. Conditions: 15/25 knots, with some moments of very light wind, fairly consistent swell, well overhead in big series. Over 30 km covered in the session, on a variety of sections from choppy waters along the beach, to large swells offshore, to DW on more sheltered sections. HM85 mast + Fluid stab H 38, 5m2 wing and 6’6 94L board.”
Take off and lift
“Take off: Clearly no problem, the take off is gradual, its thickness makes it very predictable, requiring little energy to take off. Lift: I’d place it between the Curve S-H and Curve M-H in terms of feeling. What’s really nice is that even in a big swell, with a lot of speed, it doesn’t wipe out at any moment, it stays at a good height without forcing it! It doesn’t kick out! Yet I noticed that in cruising mode I tended to be a little lower on the mast than with my Curve H.”
Speed and upwind
“Speed: It has the ability to accelerate quickly to a steady and comfortable cruising speed, but it’s not made for Vmax. In swell descents, it’s definitely fast enough, but doesn’t go “very fast” compared to a slimmer profile, which means you can maneuver serenely. Upwind: You have to find the right trick, because its great maneuverability means it’s not the most suitable foil for hard heading, but that’s not what we’re asking!”
Glide and maneuverability
“Glide: It’s not a foil dedicated to DW or Vmax, but it glides well enough to cruise at sustained speed or ride down swell that still has energy. It’s still easy to pump to catch up with sections, but it’s not as good as a Curve M-H, and has less “bounce”. Maneuverability: Clearly its best feature, it has a radical, predictable, instinctive rail-to-rail feel. I think it’s close to my Curve S-H in terms of maneuverability. It clearly makes you want to carve radically in the swell! I would have liked to try it in cleaner waves on a surf foil, to see its full potential!”
