The big air kite from our new range as seen by Thierry after his first session on a twin tip in low end conditions.

Kitesurfer: Airton, GONG team rider, with the Ayto Perf Series, Catch FSP 2X, and FeelX bar.

A Big Air kite for Freestyle

"I just tested my Ayto 12m for the first time. After undergoing knee surgery for a meniscus at the end of June, I received my kite the next day... A month and a half later, I finally got to test this new Ayto.

Background: I'm 49 years old, weigh around 75 kg, and have over 20 years of kiting experience. I was very excited to have a Big Air kite from the GONG range. I loved my Draw 13m, which had three struts. After many years of good and loyal service, I had to replace it with a Freewave 14m, which I sold a few months later because I didn’t like it at all. This new range came at the perfect time for my TT big air freestyle sessions."

Testing in Light Wind

"I was able to test it today in light wind conditions, with the anemometer showing 13 to 16 knots and gusts up to 18-19 knots. I'm very satisfied with this kite. The bar feels very light and the kite doesn’t pull too much on the harness. For a 5-strut kite, it holds up very well in the air. It's very balanced, and you can release the bar for several seconds without worrying about the kite staying at the zenith."

Responsiveness

"I adjusted my rear lines to the attachment point closest to the trailing edge for the quickest turns. I found it very responsive, even in low wind conditions, with no latency. It’s hard to over-sheet, and it doesn’t have the on/off feel that I’ve experienced with other 5-strut kites from other brands.

Despite the low wind, I had no issues going upwind. I never had to walk back on the beach."

Hang time and bar control

"When jumping, it lifts well even in this low wind range, but what impressed me most was how long it stays in the air. I recorded an 8.3m jump on WOO. I tried a few kiteloops—they worked, but I’ll need to test them again in a normal wind range to see if it catches better.

I tested it with the new FeelX GONG bar, which I found excellent. The small diameter didn’t bother me at all, though we’ll see how it handles with gloves in the winter. The new lines are very stiff, and the unwinder turns easily with just two fingers. My only criticism is the chicken loop, which is a bit small. I tried to unhook for a Riley, but I had difficulty getting the chicken loop back into my harness hook because of its small size and the gray piece that keeps the safety line in place.

In Summary

I’m very happy with this new kite and bar, and I can’t wait to test it in 15-22 knots. I have a feeling the high wind range is going to be incredible."
