Attempt a synchronized loop with your kite by executing the backroll kiteloop!

The backroll kiteloop is a key move to start learning tricks with kiteloops. To attempt it, you “just” need to pull the bar with the back hand during your backroll, and if everything goes well, you’ll complete a full rotation with your kite. Unlike a regular backroll, you won’t need to uncross the lines after the trick. Since it's a synchronized loop between the kitesurfer and the kite, the lines don't cross.

Synchronization is the key to this maneuver. In the beginning, poor timing can throw off your balance and orientation, possibly leading to a solid crash. Caution is essential when trying a kiteloop. Make sure to keep a safe distance from the beach and other riders in the water. Let’s break down how to approach it.

Steps to master the Backroll Kiteloop

  • Preparation before sending it

Ensure your kite is positioned between 11 o'clock and 1 o'clock, depending on whether you’re on port or starboard tack. Build up enough speed to maintain tension in the lines, which will aid with your backroll and control.

  • Initiate the backroll

Once ready, initiate the backroll by giving a slight push with your board while turning your head over your front shoulder, looking back to follow the direction of the rotation. This movement pulls your body into the spin and sets up the timing to activate the kiteloop.

  • Trigger the kiteloop

As you rotate, when you reach halfway through the turn (when you begin to see your kite in your line of sight again), pull firmly on the back hand of the bar to rotate the kite. The speed and power of the kiteloop are determined by how hard you pull. Keep focused on the synchronization to prevent losing your balance during the rotation.

  • Keep control in the air

Keep a stable posture by engaging your abs to stabilize your torso and absorb the forces from the loop. Try to stay centered above your board throughout the trick.

  • Land smoothly
Once the loop and rotation are complete, be sure to bend your knees to absorb the impact. If your kite is well-positioned, it will help you land smoothly. Stay relaxed and ready to adjust your direction according to your speed when landing.

Common mistakes to avoid:

  • Pulling on the back hand too early or too late: Triggering the kiteloop at the wrong time can disrupt your rotation or cause a harsh fall.
  • Neglecting your positioning: Poor body alignment can cause a loss of control in the air or a rough landing.
  • Over-generating the power of the loop: Pulling too hard on the bar, especially in strong wind, can make the loop too powerful and difficult to handle.

Final tips:

  • Start by practicing simple backrolls until they feel natural. Once you're at ease, slowly introduce the kiteloop.
  • Try it for the first time in light to moderate wind and on flat water to minimize risks.
  • Film your attempts or have a friend watch you to pinpoint aspects to improve.
