Description

Program

The Unik is our lightweight single-strut kite for foiling and all styles of not too powered-up riding.

Presentation

Lightweight with its single-strut structure, this kite is suitable for all levels and all types of practices.

Ideal for lighter wind conditions, be it with a foil, a surfboard, or a twin tip, it combines excellent stability in the air with all the power you need to cruise through tricky wind conditions.

It's a delightful kite in underpowered conditions. Thin, precise, light, with yet sufficient torque and speed to have a blast.

Dedicated to low wind conditions, it belongs to the large family of inflatable strut kites, and therefore, kites that are very simple to use. Reassuring, secure, it is also very comfortable in waves, where it will be formidable in underpowered sessions to focus on surfing.

For foiling, it's a perfect, flawless kite. Stable in 6 knots, fast enough to keep up with the foil's pace, you can go for full tilt reaches, jumps, and tricks with absolute serenity and comfort.

Whether you're progressing or at the top level, this kite is magically simple and "pure".

Shape
1 STRUT DESIGN

The Unik benefits from a single strut design that is 30% lighter than other kites. This allows for much easier navigation in light wind conditions while still providing sufficient power.

When crashed, the Unik maintains its shape with its inflatable central strut that does not easily fold. This ensures quick and easy relaunching.

HYBRID C SHAPE

The Unik is a hybrid C shape: a modern and dynamic design that maximizes performance while remaining simple and lightweight.

The turning radius is reduced, making the kite precise and lively to enhance both feeling and performance. This balance between agility and profile stability allows for very healthy original settings, resulting in an exceptionally clean bar return that enables effortless micrometric control. The direct feeling remains, allowing you to connect intimately with the kite.

SHORT BRIDLE

The new reduced diameter bridles minimize drag while maintaining impeccable mechanical characteristics. The kite flies much more smoothly.

Your Unik also adapts to your preferences thanks to adjustments on the rear bridles.

The new short bridling system enhances feedback, resulting in a much more direct feeling. Everything is more intuitive to stay in sync with your kite.

REACTIVE TIPS

The tips play a major role in your kite's behavior. By combining perfectly distributed tension and precisely calculated tip twist, we have provided the Unik with the best responsiveness while maintaining maximum control.

LOW RATIO

The low aspect ratio of the Unik provides a very reliable feeling, allowing progression without stress.

With this compact kite, we achieve the best balance between power delivery and docility.

The power of the kite is applied even at low speeds. You can feel well supported in the air. The feedback is clear and allows for easy adjustment. This linearity in the kite's power is combined with a bridling system that allows for instant depowering. Everything is under control.

This low aspect ratio advances less far towards the edge of the wind window, thus avoiding all the errors associated with this complex flight zone, especially in very light winds.

Everything about this Unik is designed to make you feel confident to maximize enjoyment and avoid troubles in 6 knots of wind.

All these characteristics make you feel like you know your kite by heart from the very first outing.

EASY RELAUNCH

The highly curved leading edge and the lightness of the Unik make it easy to rotate the kite on the water to position it on one tip for easy relaunching. Simply pull on one back line and it pivots. This ability is indispensable in certain conditions and when you decide to push the limits of light wind.

The kite is also perfectly capable of relaunching in reverse by pulling strongly on both back lines: essential in less than 8 knots of wind.

Durable Construction.

The Elips is built with the best materials available for a kite, using Dacron.

Our decades-long experience in kite making, along with all the advancements made in wing technology, have enabled us to push the performance of our kites to unprecedented levels.

The Dacron DP 175LL, combined with seams tested on a bench, provides the best in terms of rigidity and material resistance for the leading edge in Dacron.

The proven triple ripstop fabric offers perfect longevity and resistance with an ultra-lightweight of 55g/m2.

Strategically placed reinforcements ensure the durability of your equipment:

  • Insigna on the leading edge in areas prone to friction.
  • Tips reinforced with Dacron DP175LL and Nylon 1680D on the last sections of the leading edge.
  • Trailing edge in Dacron DP175LL to resist flapping over time.

Technical sheet

Kite Unik 9 m2 / NAVY

Technical Sheet:

  • Leading edge and struts made of Dacron DP175LL: rigid skeleton.
  • Trailing edge in Dacron DP175LL for good resistance to snags and better longevity in wind.
  • Canopy in highly resistant and dynamic triple ripstop fabric.
  • Strategically placed Insigna reinforcements on the leading edge for enhanced durability.
  • Tips saver made of nylon 1680D to protect the tips from abrasion.
  • Cousin 2.3mm sheathed Dyneema bridle with LIROS DC701 connection: very thin, high-quality, and low elongation.
  • 100% detachable bridles for easy replacement of worn parts.
  • Stainless steel A4 friction rings that don't get stuck or wear out.
  • One Pump system for quick inflation and deflation.
  • Micro fiberglass struts on the trailing edge of the tips: lightweight and effective against flapping.

Shape:

  • Mono-strut design: very lightweight, stable in high wind range, easy to relaunch, and remains easy to handle like a typical 3-strut kite.
  • Hybrid C shape: modern design, stable, predictable, and dynamic. Projection coefficient: 65.2%: fairly open arc.
  • Low aspect ratio (4.3) and centered surface for good low-end power and an extremely healthy and linear feel across the window. It's also extremely stable overhead and forgives many mistakes.
  • Tolerant profile for maximum stability in high winds and pilot error, allowing excellent recovery in loops.
  • Thin leading edge in the center for a fast and sleek kite in the air, while maintaining section on the tips to preserve surface area and rigidity during strong maneuvers or high winds.
  • Significant draft for good low-end power. It avoids overworking the kite, less technical, less need for excessive powering. A smaller kite is more responsive, lighter, easier to relaunch, etc...
  • Freeride outline: curved leading edge for "automatic" relaunch. The kite can roll on the water to reposition for relaunch by gently pulling on one rear line.
  • Segmented strut: more rigid at the connection with the leading edge: very crisp behavior, more power for the same area, more stability in high winds.
  • Square tips with ample surface area for good maneuverability in light wind without having to brake the kite.
  • Tips shape without internal twist for a kite with rotation relying more on the ear surface than on the brake. It maintains a fast rotation, avoiding stalling especially in extreme conditions (under 6/8 knots).
  • Light and adjusted sail tension on each section to optimize kite control: more responsive (direct feeling: no latency). Immediate depower.
  • Very smooth and direct bar feedback: you always know where your kite is by constant and measured bar pressure. It is never absent. You can "hold on" to the bar without making big mistakes. Its constant feedback prevents overacting on the bar and making mistakes.
  • Significant depower for a wide range of use and a reassuring kite. You truly have full power sheeted in and real depower. This range of adjustment reassures and provides comfort.
  • "Self-stabilizing" shape with its low aspect ratio and significant draft that "grabs" air. The swept-back tips distribute mass slightly towards the rear of the kite to avoid nosedives/stalls. You have in hand a predictable and healthy kite for maximum safety.
  • Short front bridling to avoid tangling in the tips and make the kite more responsive; attached on 4 points, with 1 friction ring pulley for more depower.
  • 2 rear attachment points to adjust responsiveness and bar presence according to individual preference.

Buying guide

For whom?

The Unik is truly the kite for everyone. Easy and light, it will simplify the sessions for progressing kiters. Playful to the core, it will be adored by pros as well.

It's really the kite that suits everyone for its flight qualities.

For what?

The Unik is all about freedom from constraints. Light, easy, and efficient, it can be taken into all sorts of programs as a kite that excels in light wind conditions.

Foil, of course, and surfing, but also laid-back freeride sessions, not to mention travels. This kite can do it all and is flown lightly to simply enjoy a maneuverable, powerful, and light kite.

Understanding our kite range:

Display : the freeride kite for rapid progression.

Vertigo : high-performance kite for all disciplines from unhooked to surfing.

Ayto : the ultimate 5-strut kite for big air and kite loops.

Unik : lightweight mono-strut freeride kite for light wind, foiling, and waves.

Strutless : super light kite for light wind and freeride/freerace.

Strutless Revo : ultra-light and maneuverable kite for foiling and surfing.

Elips : the ultimate kite for waves.

What size?

Powerful and single-strut, it's certainly a kite that excels in light wind conditions. Far from being a constraint, it's a pleasure to fly a reassuring and maneuverable kite.

Choose your kite following our recommendations below. Wind ranges always depend on your weight, skill level, and the type of board you're using!

Bar Size:

The choice of your bar size will have a direct impact on the overall feel of your kite. Remember that the longer your bar, the easier it will be to turn your kite. This detail is important when using larger kites, especially in very light winds, to maintain good responsiveness. The longer leverage compensates for this natural loss of responsiveness.

On the contrary, the smaller the kite, the faster it will turn! So, using a smaller bar allows you to balance behaviors and calm down kite reactions. Therefore, consider these factors when choosing the size of your bar and adjust the control to the feeling you like and the conditions you encounter.

  • If you prefer smooth and gradual control, you should "undersize" your bar.
  • If you prefer fast and responsive control, you should choose a larger bar.

The key size is the 52cm bar. It is the most versatile bar to choose if you want to have only one bar for a quiver of 7-9-12 or 8-11 or even 8-10-13.

When you are equipped with an extended kite quiver, it's best to also have a range of bar sizes to maintain a balanced feel when switching from a small kite to a larger one. Also, note that having two bars reduces wear on parts by half!

Here are our recommendations:

The above recommendations are based on the behavior of GONG kites. Since our bars are compatible with a wide range of kites, you can adapt your choice based on the type of kite used.

Line Length:

Your Feel-X bar comes standard with 80cm front lines, 19m of lines, and 3m extensions already mounted. The original setup is the most versatile and will be your best choice for 90% of your sessions.

One of the main advantages of the Feel-X bar is its great tolerance provided by its shape. By playing with its lengths, or even modifying them with our extensions (sold separately), you further enhance its versatility!

  • 22m Lines:
The "standard" length provides a more progressive and predictable bar feeling (recommended setting for progressing kiters). Your flight window will be larger, offering more power at takeoff. This is the setting to favor in light to medium wind conditions, and for everyday freeride use.
  • 19m Lines:
Shorter lines offer a more direct response from the kite, increasing its reactivity. The flight window will be shorter. This is the perfect setting for advanced kiters, especially for wave riding or foil for more agility. If you choose to ride with shorter lines, you will also gain comfort in high wind conditions.

Note that 22m and 19m are not extreme line lengths and remain a fine adjustment to your piloting sensation.

Frequent questions
Does the Unik fly in 6 knots?
The Unik is particularly light, without sacrificing durability! With its pronounced arc, it stays in place at the zenith, without ever falling back. You can go into the water without risking it falling. A lull? A downloop and voila, it's back up at the zenith as if nothing happened. This behavior is great when you're foiling in less than 10 knots, for example. With a 3-strut kite, it's either technical or a hassle. With the Unik, it's a non-event because it stays in the air. The relaunch is also greatly facilitated by the weight gain and shape of the Unik. Finally, not only does it fly in less than 6 knots, but it's also super cool to pilot in light winds, chaining full-speed runs and crazy moves.
Is the Unik effective in strong winds?
Without a doubt, as long as you ask it to do what it loves. If you want to score the most extreme kite loops: no. But if you ask it to surf, with a magical glide, it will give you a sense of freedom with its lightness that many will love. It's not a kite that you'll ride at breakneck speeds, overloaded to the max. No, it's a kite that you fly cleanly, which gives you the ability to ride super smoothly. It's especially a kite that we love in light wind conditions. So, a small kite relative to the wind, which will give you incredible maneuverability. Its impeccable behavior makes it a very safe kite for riding in waves, even in strong winds.
Which freeride kite to choose?
In our extensive range, we have various "freeride" kites. Depending on your conditions and level, you should orient yourself towards one model rather than another. Display: The quintessential freeride kite, it's the most versatile model regardless of your level and the conditions you encounter! With good low-end power and a stable 3-strut shape in strong winds, the Display has a very wide range of use, always with unparalleled ease of use! Intuitive freeriding, no matter the wind strength. Vertigo: Freeriding in high-performance mode! Like the Display and the Unik, the Vertigo allows you to have fun on any type of terrain. However, this kite, with its precise handling and constant pull, is favored for experienced kiters. The Vertigo is fast, reacts very quickly, and provides an impressive boost in jumps. Freeriding, yes, but in overdrive mode! Unik: Of course, it's a freeride kite, but it's developed to facilitate navigation in light or underpowered winds primarily. Its single-strut design offers impressive lightness and great stability across the entire wind window. You feel safe even in 10 knots of wind. If you frequently sail in a light wind spot and enjoy switching from twin-tip to surf to foil, this mode
What inflation pressure?
You should consider some elements: An under-inflated kite will be unstable and difficult to control in gusty winds. Relaunching will also be more complicated with a kite that doesn't maintain its shape. An over-inflated kite increases the risk of explosion during a crash and will fatigue the seams and materials of your kite more quickly. If you keep your kite inflated in the sun for a long period, we recommend slightly deflating it to reduce the risk of seam fatigue.
Kite with or without pulleys?
The Unik is a lightweight and accessible kite. A bridle without pulleys like the Elips would give it too reactive a behavior. Conversely, 3 pulleys like the Vertigo would decrease the simplicity of this kite. We have therefore chosen a short bridle with a single friction ring pulley. This type of bridle, simple and proven, offers control, tolerance, and remains simple to limit wear and provide an additional sense of security.
Compatibility of bars?
The Unik has been developed to work with the FeelX bar. Our bar has 4 lines of equal lengths and a low V at the front. The attachments for the lines at the bridle level are: Kite-side loops for the front lines. Kite-side knots for the back lines.
How to maintain my kite equipment?
To increase the longevity of your kite equipment, the way you use it and its regular maintenance are crucial. A key point during usage is not to leave your kite inflated for long periods without use! Flapping of the fabric in the wind can cause premature wear of the materials, as can prolonged exposure to UV rays. Frequent rinsing of your kite with running water is also not recommended. The chlorine present in tap water can alter the surface treatments of your kite. However, it is advisable to store your kite dry and remove any excess sand. Always rinse your bar with clean water to remove sand and salt. Also, remember to open the safety release mechanism to rinse its interior. Let it dry before reassembling. In case of a pierced strut or leading edge, use your repair kit, or check our spare parts to order the replacement piece. Systematically inspect the condition of your kite. Identify any holes or tears and have them repaired before they worsen. If you have damaged your kite due to improper use, you can have it repaired directly at the GONG workshop.
