GONG | Wing Neutra UPE
Shape
Outline

The tips have been twisted to reduce drag and improve manoeuvrability, with an ever-lighter feel in the hand.

The lugs are soft in contact with the water. The very small surface area, the reduced diameter of the tip segments and the twisting allow the wing to 'roll' on the water during risky landings. It's a wing that's easy to pump, maximising your success when coming out of tricks.

The tips can open up slightly when over-steering and at downwind speeds. You'll be more comfortable with less pressure on your arms and you'll go faster because the air is renewed in the wing. We did dozens of prototypes to calibrate this twist, because too much of it kills performance upwind and in light winds. So we've fine-tuned the dynamic twist to maintain top performance.

This new Neutra retains its highly curved leading edge with slightly adjusted segmentation and more open tips.
This geometry concentrates the power in your hands to free up the tips and boost rotation. This shape gives you a feeling of absolute lightness, and the roundness of the leading edge helps to change the orientation of the wing, particularly when you're flying it with the downwind/surf handle. And in the event of a touch of the ear on landing, the roundness of the tips won't catch on the water: an immense quality in the waves!

Working on the rigidity at the heart of the kite and the progressive twisting of the tips is a major area of development for the Neutra RH UPE.

Thanks to the use of UPE 200, all the diameters of this new Neutra's structure have been reduced.Yet it is 30% more rigid than the Dacron Neutra. In other words, it can't be beaten!
This reduction makes the wing more efficient overall, and gives you more power at all speeds: you go faster, it rides better, it's easier to handle and lighter to steer.

UPE

The power in the hands is amazing. It goes much faster, higher, and can be held much further. The performance gain provided by UPE allowed us to reduce the diameters of the leading edge and the central strut and still have a wing that’s 30% stiffer! It may seem anecdotal, but this is actually a total game changer! By reducing the diameters while increasing the rigidity, we win on all counts: the wing is simply more efficient. With more finesse, upwind sailing is improved, it goes faster, it turns better and in surfing it generates less drag making the wing totally neutral and off your mind. As for the rigidity, it brings precision, it’s much sharper and in the jumps it’s another world: the lift is really strong.

This high-end material present on the entire inflatable structure is made of a composite woven structure to obtain better resistance to stretching and tearing. The UPE is a polyethylene also called UHMwPE for Ultra High Molecular weight PolyEthylene. It is made up of ultra-long molecular chains that help to better distribute the forces. UPE is much more resistant and therefore lighter for equal resistance by reducing the grammage. For example, UPE fiber is 30 x stronger than polyester fiber! In addition to that, it is a super resistant fiber to abrasion, cuts but also to UV.

We have been working for more than two years on its integration into a range of wings. It required a complete redesign of the wings, before even talking about the shape, we had to go back to the most basic but yet fundamental elements that are the seams. Each of them has been tested, modified, then reinforced if necessary, by visible elements or not. We did dozens of tests on a traction bench, then in pressure resistance and finally in real conditions for months on the water in the hands of our team riders. It is also a must for Malo Guénolé who has now been competing for several months with this tech only.

The UPE 200 is also very light, on a 5m² we gain more than 250g! When sailing it really shows. A lighter inflatable structure translates to a phenomenal gain in reactivity, which coupled with the reduction in diameter results in a very lively wing. And when the wing is locked in neutral for surfing or freeflying, it feels really light.

3 in 1 system

To make no concessions, the Neutra UPE is geared up with our innovative and super high-end rigid handle system. The responsiveness brought by these handles is just crazy: it’s super direct, no latency, no room for doubt! With the feeling of our rigid handles and the rigidity of the UPE, it is perfectly precise, you always know where you are to send hard with confidence.

These handles are fixed with two screws on US-nuts: the same as those of your foil! This allows you to switch from the new rigid handles to our new soft handles or boom with 3 turns of tightening key!!! It’s crazy.

A real innovation at the service of your preferences. You can adapt your wing to your level, to your feelings, and even to the type of session. For example, you can use the rigid handles for freestyle, the boom for speed runs and the textile handles for pure surfing.

The appearance of our system with rigid handles with this triple solution rigid handles / boom / soft handle makes it possible to vary the dynamics of the wing. Indeed, the boom takes up a very large part of the bending forces exerted on the central strut: the wing is more rigid, and the leech retains its tension and opens less. The soft handles give a very different feeling: smooth and more secure. And rigid handles are the exact compromise between these two feelings. The handles are therefore not just another form of grip: they are a performance element that you can adjust with GONG! Thus the profile is even more effective in responding to your desires.

You can even mix the rigid and textile handles, or change them during the progression, or even according to the types of session: waves, freestyle, freeride etc… It’s very simple, very well finished, and really clever.

⚠️ Webbing handles and boom not included. We offer a well thought-out system that leaves absolutely no play. It is perfectly rigid and impossible to untighten while sailing. No hook and loop, no rope, no fragile parts, no plastic parts that fail after a year, nothing that can ruin your session. On the contrary, our parts enclose the straps which encircle the entire central strut, as on wings with handles: total reliability proven for years. No risk of seeing the central strut torn off by the handle after a few months…

At GONG we put everything into our products. Our handles come from six different molds to meet the real needs of users:

  • A front handle that sits perfectly in the hand without having to twist the wrist. It is a shorter handle because it must position your hand with great precision in relation to the center of effort. And the fore bend of this front handle is large enough to allow pistol grip in DW/freefly and surf. You thus keep some power that you can micro-adjust, and you eliminate the possible flaps which delay you. Very very practical when you know how to use it well.
  • A long rear handle to control the power by the simple positioning of the hand. Its length also allows you to grab the wing in tricks with your eyes closed. This rigid rear handle is also closer to the strut to avoid riding with the rear elbow bent.

Finally, as nothing was left to chance, the space between our two handles is the perfect center distance to place the harness line for even longer and more intense sessions. And with rigid handles, it’s not a luxury to be able to relieve yourself while keeping an incredible speed because with the harness you can chill out and be full speed at the same time: no compromise ?

Segmentation of the leading edge

Working on the rigidity at the heart of the wing with a progressive twisting of the tips is a major axis of development of the Neutra RH UPE.

Thanks to the use of UPE 200, all the diameters of the structure of this new Neutra have been reduced. However, it is 30% stiffer than the Dacron Neutra. In other words it’s as stiff as it needs to be!!! This reduction makes the wing more efficient overall and allows you to gain on all angles to the wind, you go faster, it flies upwind, it is more reactive and lighter to steer.

The leading edge segmentation always includes a section for stiffness in its center. Short and of large diameter, it locks the dihedral and reinforces the connection between the central strut and the leading edge. It’s really super stiff, it accelerates hard and in the jumps you really go higher with control and precision.

The segmentation has also been modified to adapt the twist to the rigidity of the UPE and to make the curve of the leading edge more linear. This is a detail visible only to the most knowledgeable, but it is nevertheless what makes the wing more predictable and smooth.

This segmentation also allows a more harmonious angulation of the leading edge with a fluid outline curvature which limits flexion and refines the tips.

Z strut

The Neutra UPE retains its central Z-shaped strut. Coupled with the rigid handles, it is quite simply the most efficient structure. The panel cutouts are perpendicular to the batten to make it much more resistant to high pressure and the first section maximizes its connection with the leading edge.

The central third is studied so as not to bend between the hands and open the leech. This makes the wing more precise and powerful. Finally the rear third of the central strut is sewn on the canopy without a draft panel. This increases the batten section around the back hand and gives it greater resistance to leeward bending. The central strut is twice as stiff, guaranteeing a constant shape in jumps or gusts. The rear hand acts directly on the leech thanks to a diagonal cut on the last section of the central strut. Thus the rear point of the rear handle is placed after the start of this wide cone, pulling on the rear hand closes the strut instead of letting it open on the classic struts. This reduces flapping and delivers an impressive power. The stiffness gained allows you to control the wing with great finesse and brings consistency in its behavior.

Dynamism and rigidity are the trademark of the Neutra UPE.

The architecture of the Neutra UPE centers its power for maximum maneuverability but slender at the tips for fluidity. The curved leading edge and open tips add smoothness when entering the air. It appreciates almost all angles of attack and therefore functions in all directions. It is a wing that pivots easily in the hands. Fabulous in wave riding for rotations, tricks and especially surfing!

With the Neutra RH UPE, we want finesse, precision and therefore a fairly thin profile, but we also want power and profile hold in strong winds, therefore perfect trailing edge tension and locked in draft.

3D View

UPE 200 Technology

  • It benefits from an ultra high-end construction that is both super solid and light! Though nothing is indestructible, we want durable wings capable of withstanding the worst treatments, to equip the best riders.
  • UPE 200 is an ultra high-end fabric of laminated hard polyethylene that replaces dacron on all the inflatable parts of this new wing.
  • It is a super light structure fabric: 116 g/m². This is 30% less than the Dacron DP 175LL which is 162 g/m². Though it is lighter, it is more resistant in elongation and much more rigid! To integrate it on the wings, it required a complete redesign of the wings starting with the seams which had to be adapted to this new material. After dozens of tests on a traction bench and then in real conditions, the UPE wings show much higher resistance to pressure than the dacron versions. So in addition to having a lighter and more rigid material, it is also possible to inflate it harder!

Buying guide

For whom?

Whatever your level, the Neutra is accessible. With this UPE version, we are addressing the most demanding of you.
And it’s even more true with this model which allows you to change the handles according to your desires.
It allows the most technical maneuvers but its shape is not technical.

For what?

The wave riding program traditionally brings together three aspects: a first tack where you jump, a transition maneuver, surfing on your way back, a transition maneuver, and you start over again and again…

  • If you want to surf : It’s the perfect wing.
  • If you want to jump : It’s the perfect wing.
  • If you want to turn : It’s the perfect wing.

Of course, it is crazy in downwinds thanks to its surfing performance.

What size?

Don’t overestimate the power of wings. A rider of 85kg needs 15/20 knots with a 5m² to get going when first using this wing. After about fifteen sessions, he will be flying from 15 knots with a 5m². And if he is sporty he will pump hard and take off from 12 knots with a 5m² and sail through 8 knots lulls. Mastering the low end comes naturally but it takes time.

Which Material ?

The leading edge material depends above all on your program and your ambitions. If your sessions are mostly about freeride or only take place every now and then, a leading edge and a central strut in Dacron will be sufficient. If, on the other hand, you like sporty sailing and action packed sessions, don’t hesitate! The UPE will bring you undeniable advantages, the gap is very big in terms of performance, it goes faster, higher, it runs incredibly well.

Best quiver choices?

The Neutra works with everything but especially with a compact and light board. Obviously, it will be more in phase with a foil dedicated to performance, in 85cm or 100cm for example.

You can (should) add to this combo a SUP for windless days, and surely a board dedicated to surfing. But if you’re heading towards wing foiling, you may already have these toys in the garage ?

Which leash?

A 5’5 to 8’ Wing leash will be ideal. Preferably a model dedicated to wing foiling and of the coiled type. A short leash allows you to get back on the board quickly. By letting the board go further, a long leash prevents contacts between the foil and the wing.

Check its condition before each session and change it every year. It’s your life jacket.

Don’t let your wing flap in the wind at the end of the leash, it’s not unbreakable! Ditto in the waves, do not hold your Wing by the leash, it will explode and/or you will get hurt.

With or without a harness?

Riding without a harness is sexy because it’s a thing of the moment and it makes you feel free. You can move in all directions, it’s really nice.

But it is necessary to be slightly underpowered if you do not want your arms to burn too quickly. This also means more pumping to take off.

All our wings have harness line attachments since 2021. So, the choice is yours.

So, if you like to ride with more power, the use of a harness is almost mandatory if you don’t want your sessions to be limited to one hour. In this case, the installation of harness line is super simple, (see our tutorials on the forum). We advise you to use a harness that is enveloping and as soft as possible, with a windsurfing type of hook.

So, it’s up to you to see if sensation and aesthetics prevail over performance. But it is a safe bet that soon all riders will have harnesses because the evolution will go towards more powerful wings and more performance.

Boom or handles?

It’s your choice :

  • Soft handles for beginners, for surfing, for freeflying, to protect yourself and the board, and for a very light wing.
  • Boom for maximum power and a very race / windsurf feeling.
  • Rigid handles for the best of both worlds: staying light and developing strong traction. You also gain in piloting precision.

 Windows or full canopy?

Wings without windows require a maneuverable, responsive wing and an experienced rider who sails instinctively. Always check your trajectory, especially in maneuvers and tricks.

Wings with windows are safer.
For beginners, a wing with windows is a must because safety comes first. They are used to see a silhouette to abort a dangerous curve that would cause a collision, without having to manipulate the Wing and expose yourself to a fall.

With or without battens?

In Waveriding, you need light wings. So the 2023 Neutra does not have full fiber battens. Simply small anti flap battens.

Equipments

  • The UPE 200 skeleton is the great novelty on this wing, lighter and more rigid and less bulky, it boosts performance on all points. It’s a must have for pros who want to send the biggest tricks.
  • The new large rear handle naturally positions your hand where you are most comfortable. Once in flight, your hand won’t move much, but you’ll find this big handle very useful during take-off, pumping or certain tricks where moving your rear hand makes life easier. Easier to catch than the double handle, it remains precise in steering.
  • The handle for the front hand is placed ideally. Its position depends on the hollow, so it is more precise to have a small front handle because on a good wing the profile does not move back. There is no need to move your front hand.

  • The handle for the front hand is placed ideally. Its position depends on the hollow, so it is more precise to have a small front handle because on a good wing the profile does not move back. There is no need to move your front hand.
  • A downwind handle on the leading edge that allows you to handle the shocked wing on land as well as on the water.
  • Two harness loops placed on the strut allow you to attach your GONG harness line to sail for long hours without getting tired.
  • The inflation/deflation valves are used directly with the tip of the hose (not supplied). No more non-compatible or lost nozzles!
  • The neoprene caps of the valves have been drilled to facilitate the evacuation of air when folding, even when closed!
  • The mini fiber battens at the trailing edge have been lightened for a considerable weight gain.

  • All our wings are supplied with a premium bag and a repair kit.
  • To comply with navigation regulations, we have integrated a plastic label on the intrados, close to the tip, to write down the owner’s personal information: surname, first name, telephone and address.

Warning

You must read the detailed user manual completely before using your wing for the first time.

Be sure to have a full understanding of it. Wings can be dangerous depending on their size and the strength of the wind. You have to check the wind range of your wing so that it corresponds with conditions and your actual skill level.

For the first few sessions, never use your new wing in its high wind range. Use your wing in a secure environment. Take the necessary time to learn how to handle the equipment under optimum safety conditions. Never underestimate the traction power of your wing. Even a beginner’s wing can develop a pulling force of several hundred kilos depending on its size and the strength of the wind. Do not overestimate your abilities. Misuse can cause serious injury or death to the practitioner or others. Do not use your wing at sea in offshore winds. Use your wing equipped with a leash. Be careful to avoid any collision. Be extremely careful if you sail with your wing and a board equipped with a foil. The manufacturer declines all responsibility for damage or damage caused by improper use of the wing or carelessness of the user.

Dry your wing ?

Unless you end your session with a long ride in the sun and land on a pontoon, it’s rather rare to get out of the water with a completely dry wing. ? Note that there is no need to dry your wing if it is to be used regularly in salt water, as the salt protects the materials from mold.

If, however, for transport or storage reasons you want to dry them, you must absolutely avoid hanging the deflated wing by the handle on the leading edge. It’s however very practical but it is the best way to obtain a hernia on the central strut at the junction with the leading edge following the collapse of the bladder inside. The bladders are movable in the strut and the leading edge. So if you hang it up deflated to dry, the bladder can slip, or even crumple, in the strut sleeve.

So ideally, you dry your inflated wing in the shade, and at worst flat or at least with just the inflated central strut.

Find all our How to : Dry your wing

How to inflate your wing?

Inflating your wing while it is still rolled can cause movements and twists of the bladder which will have the effect of deforming the inflated wing or causing hernias. It is therefore essential to fully unfold your wing before inflating it using the inflation valve on the leading edge.

Generalities about the wing

The wing is a machine with an inflatable structure directly in the rider’s hands. Handgrips are used to control its flight and the power delivered.

The wing’s number one advantage is the absence of a mast rig. This allows you to switch from a horizontal windsurf-type traction to a vertical kite-type traction. The best of both worlds can be combined in total freedom.

Much less complicated than a kite and much lighter than a windsurfing sail, the wing lightens you to the zenith and accelerates in front of you.

The wing combines the advantages and moves of these two sports, and it gives even more with all the possibilities linked to neutrality in surfing, and the rotations under the wing and other offsets… the potential of moves is endless.

Ideal when combined with a Foil, it is much more reassuring than a kite and much more manoeuvrable than a windsurf sail.

The wing is by far the simplest support to learn how to foil, far ahead of all other sports. A great way to learn to foil afterwards in other sports.

It is the perfect machine:

  • Compact, it fits in a car and is easy to fly.
  • Lightweight, you can ride your Quiver without having a hard time.
  • You can go in the water anywhere, except in the shorebreak.
  • Very little sensitive to the quality of the wind. If it falls we return quietly.
  • A potential in surfing and tricks almost infinite without a mast rig.
  • High performance for a minimum of constraints.
  • The attraction of novelty, it’s good to change sometimes.
  • No major danger.
  • Smile, smile and smile.

With its glide, you don’t have to overcast to have fun. In gusts of wind, its structure naturally absorbs excess power. The pros will be able to put on a harness to size up and boost performance. But amateurs will also find real relief in the harness. Contrary to popular belief, it’s the Wing that carries your arms, not the other way around. But after two hours without a harness, you have to admit that fatigue is there. Everyone is free to hold on with bare hands or to relieve themselves.

Ideal with a foil, it requires more air than a kite which will always have the advantage of pulling a lot from 4/5 knots. The wing will require between 10 and 15 knots to express itself on a Foil and will remain super easy even in 35 knots, even 50 knots, where the kite often rhymes with big risks.

It is great with a pure wing board, but also with multiple supports such as :

  • SUP foil
  • Surf foil
  • Stand Up Paddle SUP (rigid or inflatable)
  • Skate
  • Rollerblade
  • Mountain board
  • Anything that slides on snow
  • Etc.

The advantages of the wing are clearly identified: simplicity, compactness and lightness provide unequalled freedom of movement and ease of use. The wing is ready to fly in 1min chrono: no line to unroll, just two flexible slats to insert in their sheath, a few strokes and off you go.

The technology used to make the wings is very similar to that of our kitesurfing wings, but much stronger. Multiple reinforcements are present on the stress zones according to the different uses.

The shape of the wing is self-stabilizing. Don’t imagine orienting it by the force of your wrists like on a boom: it doesn’t work like that. You put your back hand down: the Wing will lay flat above your head. You put it up and the wing goes vertical. Easy! This is called umbrella or screen piloting. It is often said that the beginnings of the Wing are more like pole dancing than windsurfing. Indeed, you almost have to have the back hand vertically under the front hand when you are not flying, to keep the wing as an umbrella. This way you keep it away from the water, and you use its traction with the same angle as a kite to lighten up. So, think pole dance ;-))))))
