Why use a board cover?

The board cover is an essential accessory when traveling with your SUP board in search of new spots. The various constructions of boards available on the market are fragile and prone to damage. The travel covers we offer are of high quality; they protect your board and help keep it scratch- and damage-free for a long time.

Properly protecting your board during transport—whether by bike, car, or plane on a SUP trip—is crucial because most damage occurs out of the water.

There are many solutions depending on your needs and budget. Always choose a cover based on your board’s length and shape. You should choose a cover that matches or is slightly longer than your board.

While the primary purpose of a cover is to protect your board from impacts and sun exposure, it also makes handling easier. You’ll find it much simpler to carry by hand, over the shoulder, or to load onto your car’s roof bars.

We at GONG offer covers that fit all board types—shortboards, mid-lengths, or longboards. We provide closely sizing options to fit not only GONG boards but also boards from other brands.

If you’re unsure, each cover’s product page lists internal dimensions, so you can easily compare them with your board’s measurements.

How to Choose the Right SUP board Cover?

Choosing the best cover for your board depends on several criteria:

  • Construction and padding: thicker padding for serious trips with higher risk.
  • Outline compatibility: pick a cover whose outline matches your board’s shape.
  • Size: choose a cover equal to or slightly larger than your board.

For better protection during travel, it’s safer to choose a cover that's slightly larger than too small. This allows room to add extra padding or accessories at the board's ends for additional protection.

For example, you can wrap a wetsuit or even a poncho around the nose and tail—areas that are highly exposed to impacts.

On the other hand, an overly large cover may fail to protect properly. The board shouldn’t move inside; the nose and tail need to stay aligned with the reinforcements.

GONG SUP boardbags

SUP DAY BAG
This is the ideal everyday cover for all “home-to-beach” trips. It has 5 mm of protective foam to guard your board from minor knocks. It also offers good sun protection.

Available in a shortboard version for pointed-nose outlines, and in hybrid or longboard versions.

SUP BAG LUXE / SUP BAG LUXE RACE
Perfect for daily use or travel. The reinforced sidewall with 20mm foam will protect your board as well as possible.

Several models are available to accommodate and protect as many boards as possible. The LUXE BAG is available in three different versions: shortboard, longboard, and race.

The FLEXI HEX System

Starting your vacation with a board damaged during air transport is a nightmare—but one easily avoidable!

To protect your board from this unpleasant surprise, we strongly recommend using the Flexi-Hex that we use to ship all our hard boards.

Flexi-Hex protects everything: rails, deck, nose, and tail, thanks to its 30 mm honeycomb design. This packaging adapts to all board shapes and sizes and folds flat for storage during your holiday.

Just slide the board into a Flexi-Hex, then put everything in a sturdy boardbag—and you’re good to go!

Reusable and fully recyclable, it's the proven system we use daily to ship our boards worldwide.

How to Maintain Your Boardbag

Sand, salt, and moisture clog and corrode zippers—the main cause of boardbag failure.

To extend your cover’s lifespan, we recommend rinsing the zipper regularly with fresh water, even if it's salt-resistant. The same care should be given to wetsuit zippers.

You can also use Zip Care on your zippers. This maintenance product is perfect for plastic and metal zippers. Its unique brush applicator allows you to apply the product between the zipper teeth and physically remove dirt, salt residue, and dust.

A must-have to stay watertight in all conditions!

How to Transport Your Rigid SUP

Regardless of your transport mode—car, bike, or on foot—a quality boardbag is essential. Eventually, a SUP-sized board will hit a curb, stair rail, or trunk lip. It's just a matter of time. So instead of missing a session because of damage, invest in a good quality cover.

Here are your transport options:

Trolley for Short Distances
If you're close to your spot, you can pull your SUP on a trolley with wheels. These transport carts help you move gear from the parking to distant spots or across dunes. Folded, they take minimal space—leaving plenty of strength for paddling!

In a Compact Car
You don't need a van to carry a SUP. Some boards are compact enough to fit in a hatchback or a mid-size car—like the Mob for beginners, which can fit by folding the passenger seat.

Just ensure visibility and secure your board so it doesn’t shift or crash into the windshield. This solution suits smaller body types or those using short SUP models like the Alley or Karmen. If you need all seats or your car is too small, you'll need roof racks.

On the Car Roof: Soft Rack or Roof Bars
If your trunk is too small, don’t worry. You can transport your board on the roof using roof bars or a soft rack.

On roof bars, simply use foam padding to protect from road vibrations and shocks. These foams are made of durable materials and the same reinforced fabric as our 15 mm foam boardbags. They attach with easy Velcro.

To ensure your board stays secure, use high-quality straps. Some from Kanulock even include a locking system for peace of mind. Follow the “how to” guide to strap correctly.

If you don't have roof bars, opt for FCS soft racks—single for one SUP or double for two surfboards side by side. A safe, fully fabric system with no mechanical failure risk. On long trips, regularly check strap tension, whether using bars or soft racks.

Inflatables as an Alternative
If you can’t install roof bars or soft racks, your car is too small, or you don't have storage space, we offer a wide range of inflatable SUPs, from 7’5" ShortSUPs to 18' race boards. Inflated, they take no more space than a large backpack fitting in your trunk. The Couine Marie series even comes with wheels to reach spots with ease. Going SUPing with friends or family is no longer a problem!
