This year’s APP Stand Up Paddle World Championship in Gran Canaria was defined by challenging conditions from the very start. The forecast promised challenging heats for the competitors, with strong onshore winds, heavy rain, powerful swell, and unstable conditions throughout the week.
The competition kicked off on Thursday with the stand-up longboard division at the beach break of La Cícer. Competitors were greeted by solid 2.5-meter waves, shifting peaks, and strong currents, making wave selection and positioning extremely demanding. Despite the conditions, Moritz made it all the way to the final and finished in third place, riding the NFA XS. Benoit Carpentier took a convincing win in the final with a pair of 7's.

As the swell continued to build, the event moved on Friday to the point break of El Lloret. With double-overhead waves and persistent onshore winds, conditions were heavy and physically demanding. Competition went through to the quarterfinals that day, pushing limits in very raw conditions.
The finals were held on Sunday in still very healthy surf. Once again, it was all about control, positioning, and adapting to the power of the ocean. Which is exactly what Moritz managed to do, making it through to the final and finishing the event in fourth place overall.
“I’m happy with my result given the challenging conditions. All in all, it was a true test of endurance, decision-making, and adaptability, one of those events where simply making it through each heat was already a challenge. Congrats to all the competitors who went all in this week.” Moritz Mauch.
