Flying on the water rather than running on land is Aurelien’s choice to stay in shape during his spare time. He shares his feedback on his progress in flat starts with the HIPE Cruzader and Curve H and Sirus setups.

One hour to kill

“The fog has just cleared, the snow is poor, and I’ve got 1 hour ahead of me.

Rather than put on trainers and go for a run, a short flat start session in SUP foiling in water at 5°C. A 5/4 wetsuit and off you go! Anyway, you don’t get cold with the effort.

I’m not an expert, far from it. There’s no Guenole in my family! I bought my first SUP (CHIP 12’6 Cruising) a year and a half ago. I’d never been stand-up paddling before. But I’m also a sportsperson, and I’ve been on the water since I was a kid.”

From dock start to flat start

“I started last summer with HIPE Cruzader 7’11 and Sirus 156 (my dockstart frontwing that keeps me going for 3 minutes). I could feel the beginning of the take off, but I could not sustain it. Today I prefer my 7’0 to the 7’11 because the rocking movement is easier, but I would have had a hard time starting straight away in 7’0.

After 12 sessions of 30 minutes, I’ve corrected some of my gestures (flex when pushing, then lighten up forward, the paddle’s lower part well pronounced downwards). We often hear that you need to put your mast completely forward. In fact, the weight relief is felt more quickly under similar support conditions, but the balance in flight is not as good. So I stay on the front ¼ and that’s great.”

Fly without wind

“What a bliss to ride a foil when there is no wind conditions (since a few weeks here!). It allows me to train my cardio, my support for maneuvers, … 👍.

Expensive? Actually, the price of a mid-range bicycle 😉.

Having two setups ? What I think is great is that I’ve now got an all-purpose board. My Cruzader 7’0 is THE board I needed to wing on Lake Geneva, from 5 to 25 knots (and deflatable, to return in train). And this is the same board that allows me to take off in flat start. This is amazing!”

Flat start foiling

The Sirius 156 in flat start ? In winter with the wetsuit, I’m up to 70 kg. This is my beloved wing in dockstart. In flat start, I have to give it my all and must be lacking in technique.

The Curve 6 X-LH ? I’ve gone back to the basics in wing: don’t pretend anything and think big to increase your time flying – it works, here is the proof! Just don’t rush it in the turns.

What’s next ? The Sirus 186, of course 😉.”
