The compact board for maximum performance in small conditions.

Introduction

The Matata Surf Foils are a reference in the world of surf foiling for their length / volume ratio coupled with their performance.

Built in FSP Pro, this full carbon PVC sandwich board is the most dynamic and solid of our Matata. The Matata FSP Pro Surf Foiling board have been developed exclusively for surf foiling with a full carbon PVC sandwich construction of the highest quality. The hydrophobic high density PVC foam shell is both a protection against violent shocks and an incredible gain in rigidity. The difference in nervousness is crazy during the pumping phases and in radical maneuvers where you absolutely do not feel the board bend or twist.

Inspired by the Matata surf, our shape dedicated to soft waves, the Matata foiling board maximizes mediocre conditions. In these sessions, what matters is not having a large board to drop from a distance, as you often take off with whitewater; but it’s about pumping as efficiently as possible to connect as many waves as possible and add up the moves per take off.

With its tiny size ranging from 3’11 to 4’11, the Matata has no inertia in front of your foot. It’s really a micro board with volume. You pump in direct connection with the foil, almost as if the board does not exist.

Its particularly complex hull optimizes the flow before the flight to boost this very compact shape and give it the glide of a large board. Its volume with sophisticated distribution is however classically placed in the board with most of it between your feet and a super thin nose.

Using such a short board is super fun. The handling is just amazing.

5 boards from 3’11 to 4’11 for all sizes. With the Matata Foiling board, you surf foil with a board at the forefront of technology, solidity, dynamism and durability come together, and all this without breaking the bank thanks to our online sales system (direct sale from the shaper to the foiler, without intermediary).

  • The small 3’11 is 27L, which allows those with a high technical level and a small build to have maximum performance.
  • The 4’2 x 32L and the 4’5 x 38L are aimed at riders of a medium size and of a confirmed level.
  • The 4’8 x 44L and 4’11 x 52L are perfect for big guys and progressing, with absolute comfort and accessibility thanks to their generous volumes.

Buying guide

For whom?

From the confirmed to the Pro, the Matata is for those with foil experience looking for performance.

Whether you’re a lightweight or of a strong build, the Matata range offers all volumes.

On this short board, you need to be a good paddler or to be at a technical level where pumping is how you move around in the line-up.

What is it for?

Pretty much everything you love about surf foiling is awesome on the Matata FSP PRO Surf Foiling board. Drop with a tiny amount of foam, pick up speed, carve in a handkerchief, densify your surf, pump your way back to the peak without forcing, connect the next bump with a big turn, do this 5 times, 10 times etc…

Obviously with its mini length it is not the queen of paddling, so with this board you should favor spots with breaking waves that you can catch on your way back. And you can especially bet on its pumping performance to add up the flight minutes.

What size?

  • The 3’11 x 27L is the ultimate size: light foiler or top level only.
  • The 4’2 x 32L is a high performance board for lightweights, advanced or athletic foilers.
  • The 4’5 x 38L is also a high performance board and is aimed at foilers who have had a first experience of surf foiling and wishing to go to the next level.
  • The 4’8 x 44L is comfortable and perfect for the bigger foilers. Also recommended for small beginners.
  • The 4’11 x 52L is very comfortable, what else? ? Bigger foilers or beginners, this board is the one.

In all cases, they are very compact shapes offering a lot of dynamism.

How to choose the size of the board bag for my Surf Foil Board Matata?

 For the pros:

The Curve H, Fluid H, Veloce H, Ypra or Ypra S ranges are very high performance and fast wings: remember that the H versions offer an insane glide for each of their specific use. The Ypra wings for instance are simply the wings of our pro team on the World Tour.

Inthe Curve H range: wings with a crazy glide that love to draw pretty lines, with a smooth and eaaaaasy glide:

  • S for those under 55kg or heavier foilers in waves with a lot of power.
  • M for those under 65kg or heavier foilers in waves with power.

  • L for those under 75kg and heavier foilers that want to produce a dynamic type of surfing.
  • XL for those under 85kg in small waves and the heavier foilers that want a versatile FW for surfing / pumping.
  • XXL for those above 85kg in very small conditions and the lighter foilers who want a FW they can pump and turn.

In the Veloce H range: fast wings with a crazy glide that love curves, and still are easy at low speed:

  • S for those under 55kg or heavier foilers in waves with a lot of power.
  • M for those under 65kg or heavier foilers in waves with power.
  • L for those under 75kg and heavier foilers that want to produce a dynamic type of surfing.
  • XL for those under 85kg in small waves and the heavier foilers that want a versatile FW for surfing / pumping.
  • XXL for those above 85kg in very small conditions and the lighter foilers who want a FW they can pump and turn.

In the Ypra range: the fast wings par excellence intended to winging upwind and downwind, typically on a square or triangle racing course:

  • XS: not appropriate for surf foiling except for tow-in in big conditions.
  • S: not appropriate for surf foiling except for tow-in in big conditions.
  • M: not appropriate for surf foiling.
  • L: not appropriate for surf foiling.
  • XL: not appropriate for surf foiling.

In the Ypra S range for Slalom : racing wings with maximum curves / jibes, also great for Freestyle:

  • XS: not appropriate for surf foiling except for tow-in in big conditions.
  • S: not appropriate for surf foiling except for tow-in in big conditions.
  • M: not appropriate for surf foiling except for powerful waves +++.
  • L: not appropriate for surf foiling except for powerful waves ++.
  • XL: not appropriate for surf foiling except for powerful waves +.

In the Sirus range: wings with the ultimate aspect ratio to fly longer than everyone else in marginal conditions and dock start sessions:

  • L for those under 75kg in super small powerless waves.
  • XL for heavy foilers in microscopic waves.
  • XXL for heavy foilers in microscopic waves but a tricky size to deal with.
3XL for everyone in flat dock start sessions but not in the waves.

At this level, everyone can adapt their equipment to their needs. Just remember that the wingspan is a point to take into consideration when riding high aspect ratios. The glide is fabulous, but be careful not to sacrifice maneuverability and rail-to-rail precision by using large sizes if you are looking for a very reactive drive. This is why even the pros do not necessarily ride in high aspect ratios!

The size of the front wing and in particular its surface and its volume condition the speed/lift ratio. The smaller the wing, the faster you will go and the shorter you will be able to turn but the more uncomfortable you will be at low speeds. The bigger the wing, the earlier you will fly but you’ll be penalized in handling.

Which stabs?

The stabs have a major role. They determine the stability of the foil and help with its lift, but to the detriment of the maximum speed of the foil and its maneuverability if they are too large. The role of the stabilizer is to stabilize the foil but also to compensate for the natural tendency of the front wing to dive. So you must have a good balance of surfaces between your stab and your front wing. A 38 cm stab with an XXL wing will give a catastrophic result at high speed: the foil will dive at high speed because the stab will no longer be able to lift enough to counteract the nosediving torque of the front wing.

Remember that the stab must be proportional to the front wing. This is why we have named them S M L XL like the front wings so that you can pair them easily. Creating an imbalance brings no benefit except the illusion of better glide.

Thus the X-Over stabs are slower than the Fluid or Veloce stabs, but are much more lifty, and therefore effective at low speed or with a large front wing (for beginners for example). The Curve stab is at the border of these two worlds and the Freestyle stab is 100% dedicated to radical moves.

In theX-Over range: super easy and effective stabs from low speeds to progress smoothly:

  • L 44 for those under 75kg or with a front wing S, M or L.
  • XL 48 for those over 75kg or with a front wing L, XL or XXL.

In the Curve range: very simple stabs that love beautiful curves, with a stable and smooth glide:

  • S 36 for those under 65kg or with a front wing XS, S or M.
  • M 39 for those under 75kg or with a front wing S, M or L.
  • L 43 for those under 85kg or with a front wing M, L or XL.
  • XL 46 for those over 95kg or with a front wing L, XL or XXL.

Inthe Fluid H range: stabs with a crazy glide for a radical drive but easy and relatively fast:

  • S 38 for those under 65kg or with a front wing XS, S or M.
  • M 42 for those under 75kg or with a front wing S, M or L.
  • L 45 for those under 85kg or with a front wing M, L or XL.
  • XL 47 for those over 95kg or with a front wing L, XL or XXL.
  • XXL 49 for everyone on giant wings or with a front wing XL or XXL.

In the Veloce H range: the fast stabs dedicated to high speeds which are off your mind when riding:

  • S 36 for those under 55kg or with a front wing XS or S or for tow-in.
  • M 40 for those under 65kg or with a front wing S or M or for tow-in.
  • L 44 for those under 75kg or with a front wing M, L or XL.
  • XL 47 for those over 85kg or with a front wing L, XL or XXL.

Inthe Freestyle range: stabs totally dedicated to tricks with a psycho pop and tight curves:

  • S 39 for those under 65kg or with a front wing XS, S or M.
  • M 41 for those under 75kg or with a front wing S, M or L.
  • L 44 for those under 85kg or with a front wing M, L or XL.
  • XL 46 for those over 95kg or with a front wing L, XL or XXL.

 Which foil mast?

The perfect mast can be as short as 55 cm if you’re a beginner and up to 85 cm for tow-in sessions. The ideal height is between 65cm and 77cm. Find all our advice on choosing between these two lengthsby clicking here.

To sum up:

  • 55 cm: beginner ++
  • 65 cm: beginner and versatile.
  • 70 cm: versatile and fast carbon mast.
  • 72 cm: for those over 100 : wingspans over 90cm and/or more than 100kg.
  • 77 cm: fast drive, extra margin for errors, great for tow-in and DW.
  • 85 cm: great for tow-in and solid DW conditions.

The HM masts are almost essential since you will get the best out of this board with high performance front wings that require perfect energy transmission to reveal their potential.

Quiver partners?

If you’re into surf foiling you’ll be into classic surfing when the waves get hollower and break over a shallow reef. You will have a wide range of choice in our range to complete your quiver.

Surf foiling tends to eat up the usual SUP program because it enjoys the same waves. It’s not easy to marry the two but having diversity in a quiver is always a plus. Surf foiling is typically perfect in the conditions of an NFA for example.

We will often complement a surf foiling board with a wing because it is the ideal combination when the wind is rising. The wing is really the ski lift for a surf foiler. It’s a completely natural extension of it.

Which settings?

A beginner will pull the foil all the way back.

And an expert will place his foil in the center of the boxes or a tiny bit more forward.

Which leash?

Remember that a leash is compulsory ?

A short leash, a 5′ of 6 mm is sufficient in small waves. A 6′of 7mm will be much safer as soon as it gets bigger. It’s your lifejacket, you have to use it to protect yourself and others. It is imperative to renew it every year because it wears out.  Before each session, inspect the presence of tiny cuts as they will eventually lead to breakage.

Equipments

  • 2 US GONG double entry boxes for standard foils equipped with top plates with 4 screws and nuts, also compatible with our SCS system (9cm center distance). This new system allows ultra-fast assembly of GONG foils. (SCS NUTS NOT SUPPLIED WITH THE BOARD).
  • 5 mm thick Velvet Traction deck pad: designed for great comfort and absolute grip.
  • Leash plug Concrete Fixed at the tail so you never lose your board.
  • Automatic vent screw.
  • Set of 2 FOOTSTRAPS SYMMETRIC LIGHT Blue
  • 8 5-hole footstrap inserts to optimize your stance, Goofy or Regular.

The Matata FSP PRO Foiling boards are equipped with our premium 5mm thick Traction Velvet Pad. The Hard Brush surface treatment provides a firm grip. The comfort is unparalleled because the entire surface of the foot is in contact with the pad. Unlike a pad with large reliefs, the grip is made by an infinity of micro reliefs, hence this “velvet” contact. This new one-piece pad covers the entire useful surface of the deck. It exempts you from waxing your board. It is very comfortable when paddling as the grip on your body prevents the board from slipping away in the chop. It protects your board from unfortunate knee hits in badly executed take offs. And it has no angle that could end up peeling off.

On the new Matata, we integrate our double entry US box system to accommodate the SCS solution launched on all our recent foil boards. Installing your foil with this system is super easy for more time spent on the water.

With the SCS nuts connected by the composite rods, your nuts are automatically perfectly aligned to fit the boxes. You place them on the 4 entries, you insert them all at once, you set the mast back to the chosen position and in two turns of the key per screw the foil is fixed. The GONG double entry box facilitates the assembly and adjustment of the foil! Performance without the hassle. When dismantling your foil you can leave the nuts and the screws on the top plate. Just loosen the screws, remove the foil and that’s all! It is the plug and play solution which facilitates adjustments (SCS nuts not supplied with the board).

And with the leash plug on the back of the board to secure your leash, nothing is missing.

The set of footstraps is offered with the board. Comfortable and light, they offer perfect support for your feet even in the craziest tricks. The goofy and regular multi-position strap inserts allow you to mount straps for your stance. This will give you a more direct and precise control in your maneuvers.
